This isn’t normal is it? (IL related)

My MIL has rows with just about everybody. She has at least five siblings but is only speaking to one. She has three adult children but two have cut her off (first DH and then his younger sister). Her eldest daughter (the one she speaks to) has had two divorces and both exes blame MIL for interfering in the marriages and SIL for taking notice of her mother (this was the reason the younger SIL cut off MIL, she spoke badly about her DH and his family, tried to cause trouble) and, when I knew MIL, she had been ostracised at work.

I’ve just found out that olderSIL’s eldest has now cut her off for saying nasty things about her dad (one of SIL’s exes).

Why do some people do this? It’s not normal to have this level of ostracism in a family is it? I have a really small family (parents dead, one sister) so I don’t lnow and it’s not the sort of thing people talk about. But I can’t believe it’s normal.

It’s not normal yes but you don’t need to worry about that do you? She’s not in your lives so just ignore hers.

She sounds toxic, you're well out of it!

No, not normal. But, frankly, neither is being so invested in someone you are not in contact with.

kawla We were the first of the next generations to leave iyswim (she wasn’t speaking to half her family when I met DH but estranged children are different) so I have wondered whether it would blow over. I think I’m only just realising now that it wont and this is just what she’s like.
