What is this weird thing in my throat??

Since Thursday, it’s been really painful to swallow on one side of my throat. It feels like there is a huge painful lump inside my throat but I can’t see anything at all when I look in the mirror - my tonsils don’t look red or swollen, no lump is visible and my voice isn’t hoarse. But it’s so unbelievably painful to swallow and nothing makes it feel better - ice lollies, lozenges, paracetamol, nothing is touching it at all! What on earth could it be?

I’m really considering trying to get a GP appointment tomorrow though it’s likely impossible to be seen and it would mean calling in sick to work - but I am required to talk all day long at work and I don’t think I can tolerate the pain! It just seems such a weird, specific complaint. I’ve had plenty of sore throats in my life but this is just odd!

I don’t know what it is but I think it warrants a GP visit. Hope you feel better soon.

EleanorLavish · 07/10/2018 08:19

I would definitely take a trip to a minor injuries/GP tomorrow, or you could try a large pharmacy today and ask a pharmacist for advice?
It could be an abscess, do you have any other symptoms? Temperature, feeling unwell other than the pain?

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/10/2018 08:22

Thanks. No temperature at the moment but I’ve had a bad cold for the last three weeks and have been feverish with it. I now mostly feel better, just very tired so thought I was over it but then this popped up in my throat!

Do your ears tingle? Could be hayfever

Heatherjayne1972 · 07/10/2018 08:24

Could be a Quincy
Infection in the pockets that are on the tonsils
Yes go get the gp. Hope you get better soon

Topseyt · 07/10/2018 08:24

You do need an emergency GP appointment. It could be a quinsy, which is an abscess on or around the tonsils. Insist on being seen. Insist it is an emergency, because they can be. Very much so.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I've had a friend with this before who had a toothbrush bristle stuck in her throat. Could it be that?

LaserShark · 07/10/2018 08:25

My ears aren’t tingling - I can feel it when I swallow in my right ear, it’s a bit of a dull ache.

DH was once told he had globus hystericus (i think that's right but not certain) and symptoms sounded similar, could it be that? Think it was triggered by stress

LaserShark · 07/10/2018 08:28

Topseyt, wouldn’t my tonsils look inflamed then? When I look in my mouth in the mirror, I can’t see anything apart from a tiny little lump. But when I swallow it feels enormous.

I don’t know how I’d know if it was a toothbrush bristle.

I’ll call the GP to try for an emergency appointment tomorrow morning.

Alwaysatyke, I have been very stressed recently!

Have you eaten fish recently?

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/10/2018 08:44

Yes, I eat quite a lot of fish. If it’s something like a fish bone or a toothbrush bristle stuck, would it just work its way out?

abbsisspartacus · 07/10/2018 08:48

Tonsil stone?

ihearttc · 07/10/2018 08:56

I bet I know what it is cause I get it too. My Eustachian Tubes (the tubes that go from your ear to your throat) frequently block especially after a cold and all the gunk has no where to go. My ear itself doesn't hurt but when you swallow it feels like there is a huge lump at the back of your throat (I don't have tonsils so can't be those).

Try a decongestant nasal spray to open up your Eustachian Tubes and it might help.

Racecardriver · 07/10/2018 09:03

I had this a while ago after a fever. Eventually I coughed put a massive solidified chuck of mucus and I was fine after that.

FaithInfinity · 07/10/2018 09:22

Call 111 and see if you can get an appointment with OOH today. If it is a quinsy you need to be seen ASAP. From the sound of it, most of what you’re experiencing in further down so won’t be visible externally.
