Either I'm losing my marbles or something weird is happening.

Today I was looking for my pot of lip balm, I'd left it on top of the microwave. It wasn't there. I moved everything on the worktop including the microwave moved it all to a different work surface then put the microwave back, the pot of pasta, the whirly thing with knives and the kitchen roll. I put it all back one by one still nothing.

Just dh and I at home, I asked him if he'd seen it he said no. I then started hunting around the kitchen dh came in and pointed to where I had literally just moved everything and said 'is that it' it was on top of the microwave.

A few hours later I needed some Rennie liquid went to the cupboard where it's normally kept it's not there. I took the whole cupboard out gave it a clean and put everything back. Started rooting elsewhere just in case and then I ask dh really exasperated if he'd seen it. He says no, comes in to help me look opens the cupboard I had just cleaned out and says 'it's here' and gives me a Hmm look.

I asked him if he was messing about even though I knew it wasn't him. So I'm losing my marbles aren't I?!

Carbon monoxide poisoning.

NormHonal · 05/10/2018 20:20

Stress/grief? Your mind is busy computing something else.

Stress could be a factor, hadn't thought of that.

There’s a well know phenomenon where this happens. You have an image in your mind of the object and that image is what your brain is looking for. You can actually scan over the object and if it’s not matching that visual image (for example it's upside down) then your brain doesn’t ‘see’ it.)

Our brains are weird, eh?

This has happened me loads of times over the years. Sometimes things turn up weeks later in exactly the place I have been looking for them all along. It's weird.

I had this looking for golden syrup in Aldi. First time I couldn't find it at all. Scoured the whole shop, especially the baking section.

Second time - same again. Just about to give up then there it was right in front of me in the baking section Hmm

I've driven myself mad and now I'm convinced I didn't look properly even though I did!

Bow that's really interesting!
