How old is too old for clothes

Mailfuckoff · 05/10/2018 18:10

I've recently been looking at old photos and I've realised some of my tops are 10 years plus old, they are older then my dc.
How old is too old for clothes? I've started wearing my early 2000s Jean jacket as they are back in fashion!

I am still wearing clothes I've had since I was 12.

I thought this was going to be about enforced nakedness of the elderly Confused

I have only just got rid of my GM' s cardigan.
She died in 1974

Grin I thought "how old is too old for clothes" meant "at what age is it acceptable for me to stop wearing clothes."

OP, I wish I could still fit into my pre-dc clothes Sad

DollyWilde · 05/10/2018 18:29

Same as arandomposter

I’m 29 and have a dress my mum bought me when I was 16. It’s a squeeze now though admittedly. Sad

nancy75 · 05/10/2018 18:30

ProfYaffle I thought the same as you, I was quite concerned - i don’t think my saggy body is in any way suitable for enforced nakedness Grin

fleshmarketclose · 05/10/2018 18:31

Dd is the same size at 25 as she was at 13. She still wears a couple of dresses that I bought her back then. I have clothes that I still wear that must be eight years old as well. If they are still presentable and fit I don't see why they can't be worn.

Me too!

rslsys · 05/10/2018 18:36

Not a problem going forwards, how many of the clothes you buy today will still be wearable in 10 years?

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 05/10/2018 18:37

Dps favourite tshirt is at least 25 years old.

It's a Metallica hockey top.

MiddlingMum · 05/10/2018 19:08

A good half of my clothes are more than 10 years old. Today I wore a coat which must be at least 25 years old.

I have some gloves which my DM knitted when I was at university. I wear them every winter, so they have had about 35 years use. My favourite winter nightie is 20 years old this autumn, and hasn't even started wearing out.

how many of the clothes you buy today will still be wearable in 10 years? The vast majority, I hope. Good quality clothes should easily last more than a decade if cared for properly.

Sarcelle · 05/10/2018 19:13

I have a fine cream cord shirt/jacket from Top Shop that I bought when I was 18. I am now 53. I go through phases of being too chunky to wear it but I can fit in it at the moment. Whenever I wear it I get compliments and I get asked where I bought it. It is in great condition, hasn’t dated. I doubt that most High St clothing would last 35 years these days.

Knittedfairies · 05/10/2018 19:19

I thought you were going to tell me how old I have to be before I can legitimately wear pjs all day...

OuEstPierreLapin · 05/10/2018 19:22

Currently wearing a Nirvana t shirt from when I saw them at Reading '91.

kelper · 05/10/2018 19:22

I have a hoodie from Gap that my aunt bought me for my 11th birthday.
I'm nearly 40.....
I still wear it, it looks virtually brand new, the colour hasn't dulled at all.
It makes me long for days when clothes were made proper ;)

Sitranced · 05/10/2018 19:39

Other than yourself who is going to know or care how old an item of clothing is?

thedevilinablackdress · 05/10/2018 19:42

No such thing. Why would there be???

peanutbutter310 · 05/10/2018 19:43

Another who opened the thread thinking OP was going to advocate for OAP nude camps!

TheFaerieQueene · 05/10/2018 19:47

My husband’s aunt was 89 and a passenger in her sons Lagonda. (A very old open side vehicle). It was November and she was wearing her father’s leather jacket, which was well over 100 years old.
Does she win?

cariadlet · 05/10/2018 20:01

I thought that it was going to be a thread about how old is too old for giving clothes as a present to your dc (ie when they start too moan that you have no taste or fashion sense).

Latest on-trend fashions probably only last a few years.

But bog-standard jeans and t-shirts or well made, classic stuff lasts for decades. I have clothes from before I moved to where I live now, so at least 25 years old. Most of my work clothes are from charity shops so I have absolutely no idea how old they are.

MikeUniformMike · 05/10/2018 20:03

I have old clothes in perfect nick. If you love it and it fits and doesn't look ridiculous wear it or keep it.
