My DD is one in a few weeks and I was wondering, from your experience, what is the best toys for one year olds? The hide and squeak eggs are one of my best purchases so far! Looking for things similar to that. We don’t have a huge budget. Thank you!

We got these building blocks (plus the accompanying set of all different shapes). DS still plays with them now and he's 3.3yo.

DS also loved his plastic stacking cups. He liked to knock the tower over, stack them, hide small toys under them, watch us build the tower upside down (small one at the bottom!). Totally portable and not expensive.

If family are asking... then Duplo has been a great gift, bit too old for 1yo but an ideal investment for future years. We did HappyLand for DD's first birthday, all the family bought something from the set and both children have played with it. It sat unused for a while, but came into it's own when the children hit 2.

I came on to ssy the eggs, my dd still sometimes plays with them and she's 3! She also really liked the Fisher Price laugh & learn bear and wooden bricks

Toot Toots are popular in our house, sturdy, easy to grip (my 9 month old can manage them) and can interact with bigger additions (we have the fire station and big aeroplane). On the downside, they sometimes go off by themselves which scares the bejeesus out of me, and some of them are voiced by Justin Fletcher. So having Mr Tumble scream ‘I’m a super fire engine’ throughout the day can be off putting (they do switch off thankfully).

My eldest was also given cars that join up magnetically for his first birthday, and they are probably one of his favourite toys to this day.

Plastic stacking cups - my 2.5 year old still loves playing with them, they're easy to keep clean and are great bathtime toys.

Musical instruments - a jingle bell, castanets, small drum.

A V-Tech 'my first phone' thing that I found for a quid in a charity shop. Normally I hate noisy plasticky toys, but it's been a firm favourite...
