How to explain my absence from work?

I'm currently signed off work sick with mental health issues. I have started taking medication and really want to get back to work as soon as I feel better and able to get myself ready each morning and survive a day in the office (which I definitely don't feel able to do at the moment). My question is: when I go back my colleagues are all likely to ask me why I've been away and I really don't know what to say. I don't want to say depression/anxiety etc. If I say 'personal issues' that sounds really stand-offish. Any advice please?

Just say you have been ill and would rather not discuss the details, but thank you for asking, I'm feeling much better now and am glad to be back. Big smile.

Tell them the truth. I did when I was off with similar a few years ago. They were able to support me better.

We had a team member who was bipolar. Because we all knew we knew how to support him, and not wind him up.
