Pocket money

We are thinking of starting pocket money for our DC (8 & 6). We are not thinking large amounts at the moment - maybe £2 a week. I have the following questions:

  • what do the wise MNers think about the amount? We could afford more but don't want them growing up thinking money grows on trees.
  • my DH thinks we can get away with giving different amounts to the older and the younger child and that we should establish that pattern now b/c when they're, eg 12 & 10 their spending needs will be different. I think this is a recipe for disaster and that it's better to give them the same now but explain when the time comes that the older one will be getting more because their needs have increased. Would welcome your views.

i wold at this age give them the same, but, say when dc1 is 10 then raise their amount.

We do ours based on age. As you’re hiking about £2 per week, I’d say give the older £8 per month and the younger £6 per month

Better to start off this way as you have something firm to relate it to.

Why would different amounts be a recipe for disaster? All the families I know well enough to talk about pocket money who have kids of different ages give different amounts.
