Asda Magic

I've applied for a 16 hour checkout role with my local Asda just to help in the run up to Christmas really. I've passed the first stage of application and 50 'personality' questions and now I've been invited to an Asda Magic day! Apparently I'll have to do one on one discussions, do a team activity, possibly building a bridge with balloons, or straws, a one on one interview and 30 minutes of trying the role out. I think this is way over the top for a checkout role!

Anyway my question, has anyone been on the Asda Magic day and can tell me what it's like?

Asda are not the only company who have interviews like this.

When you list it all it sounds like a lot but its not really.

Day one : magic session ie two hours of team building.
Day two: If successful a 1-2-1 with the department manager. Then a short time approx 30mins trying out the job to see if you think that you will like the job.

I worked on checkouts in Sainsbury’s aged 16, would never have got the job if it involved all this faff! An online test? HR/Recruitment function gone mad.

Although possibly they are trying to avoid employing people like 16 year old me!

They get so many applications, they have to filter them somehow as they don't have time to interview everyone.
Asda checkout staff are always really lovely and friendly though so they must be doing something right. Good luck OP!

@ChiaraRimini thank you 😊

@WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream have you been to your magic day yet? What was it like and how did you get on? I’ve just been invited on one!

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 15/10/2018 19:58

@WoollyMollyMonkey well done! The day got cancelled due to their staff sickness apparently so has been rescheduled for 2 weeks' time. When is yours?

@WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream it was today! I was so nervous, I haven’t been for a job interview for years! Actually though it was ok. The Asda staff were lovely, very friendly, and the group thing was not as awful as I expected, I hate those “talk to your partner then introduce them to the group” activities, but luckily we didn’t do that. We had a sheet with lots of questions on it and we just chatted about them, eg who has been to the most exotic place, who has had the weirdest injury - it was quite fun really. No practical task with balloons or spaghetti or anything like that, thank goodness!

We had a tour of the shop and a try out on the shop floor, each of us with an Asda colleague and just helped them with what they were doing - mine was changing price labels on shelves and putting out more stock. I enjoyed it!

Then we had an interview with two managers - a bit more scary, but got through it! Have to wait now for the yay or nay (phone call if yay, email if nay!)

Good luck with yours!
