Amazon Echo Ad

Has anyone noticed this advert where a man is at home looking after a baby and he gets messages and reminders all day via Echo from his partner? It gives me the rage. I think the idea is to be modern and accepting that men can stay at home to look after kids too but only if the partner/mother constantly tells them what to do, even in absentia

Yes, it’s outdated, insulting and vomit inducing, in equal measures.

Who exactly is their target market with this ad?!

MelonBuffet · 30/09/2018 12:27

Yes, I think there has been a thread - or at least posts on a thread! - about this recently.

It’s a poor attempt to try and justify a need for this product which doesn’t revolve around its primary purpose - to allow Amazon access to your wishes and wants so that you will buy more from them!! (What’s the betting that their Amazon account will start showing ads for teething rings and baby stuff!)

Even ignoring the part about a man being unable to take care of his own child for a few hours without his wife arranging and organising everything for him - urgh! - why can’t she use her actual voice to tell him she loves him rather than programme a machine to tell him?!

Hate this advert!

Ornitorrinco · 30/09/2018 12:28

I thought exactly the same thing. If I left DP messages like this I think he would likely feel extremely belittled and like I don't trust him to organise himself. He has a daughter and never, EVER forgets the school run, to feed her, to take her to her clubs, etc etc. I'm sure he will manage just fine when our baby is born.

Terribly sexist advert.

MelonBuffet · 30/09/2018 12:29

Although I’m fairness I discovered the one actual time an Alexa might have been useful last night when DP and I were hugging in the kitchen and I said “do you want to dance?” He said “Alexa play sexy dancing music” but I don’t have an Echo so it didn’t Grin

Pretty much all other applications for it seem utterly pointless to me!!

MelonBuffet · 30/09/2018 12:30

*in fairness

EwItsAHooman · 30/09/2018 12:33

I hate that advert. Man's wife goes out for a few hours (how dare she!) so she arranges for robotic wife to cover her role for a few hours because how on earth could Man cope without the domestic manager there to run things?

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 30/09/2018 12:35

This advert gave me the rage. Firstly that she can't even go out for the day without having to still do and organise everything and secondly that he apparently couldn't cope if she didn't! Absolute shite!

EwItsAHooman · 30/09/2018 12:44

"you're doing an amazing job"

When's the last time he told her that!?
