Is it OK for tutor to be home alone with child?

DS2 is 15 and getting extra help with English.

Usually, I get home just before tutor arrives but if I'm running late, DS1 is here.

This week, I have to go to an appointment with DS1 and we'll be out for the whole lesson. Is that OK or should I cancel tutor?

FWIW I haven't formally checked dbs etc but I have verified she works at a local school and seen her ID.

DS is fine, I'm more concerned that it puts her in an awkward position. Equally, I don't want to mess her about and I don't really want DS2 to miss his lesson.

When I tutored I was often alone with children. Talk to them and see if they’re happy about doing it.

It depends on your personal feelings, but if there had been several sessions and I felt comfortable with the tutor (and my son wasn’t a monster who might sexually harass her if left unsupervised) then yes I’d be OK with that. Not on a first or second session.

As a tutor, absolutely not. It isn't fair on the tutor and she's leaving herself wide open to allegations.

Please don't ask her, organise something else.

Never had an issue with dropping any of my DC with their tutor. Many tutors locally tutor from their own homes and DC are dropped off. Really up to you and what your most comfortable with

PurpleDaisies · 30/09/2018 09:35

Really lots? Loads of tutors i know would have no problem with that situation.

It’s hobestly fine to ask. If she’s as militant as lots, she’ll just say no.

GingerFrogs · 30/09/2018 09:35

I think it's fine.

I used to go to my tutors house, get dropped off then collected an hour later. It was always just me and them.

MaryBoBary · 30/09/2018 10:02

In the same as @overagain. If you have used her for a while and she is happy then there’s no reason not to

geogteach · 30/09/2018 10:26

I work as a local authority tutor for kids not in school, this would not be ok for us. We have to have an over 18 in the house or meet in a public place. Could you suggest a one off session in a library or cafe?

hmmwhatatodo · 30/09/2018 10:28

If you’re all happy with it then it’s fine.
