Do you still cut up your kids’ grapes?

My DS is 8 in a few weeks and I still cut up his grapes, in case of a choking hazard. My MIL thinks that I’m crazy and laughed at me when I told her I did this 🙈

What do you do?

I'm sure there was someone on here just a couple of months ago whose 9 yo choked on a grape.

I still cut up 5yo DD's.

AllAtHome · 29/09/2018 20:10

Yes.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/09/2018 20:11

I never did, I honestly didn't know I was supposed to.

I still cut them up for DSes who are almost 7 and 4yo, and probably will continue to do so for some time. An 8yo does at the hospital I work at choking on a grape so it’s not something I take lightly. They are the perfect shape to get lodged in the oesophagus and very difficult to remove.

I have also had MIL laughing at me, so I hide them when she’s over so she can’t give them to the DC.

Upslidedown · 29/09/2018 20:12

I never have. I've never admitted that before. When we have guests or are taking fruit on a picnic with other kids I do then glare at DS if he comments on them.

I know I'm meant to be better and do it but he really chewed his food from first tastes at six months so I just never bothered.

Itchytights · 29/09/2018 20:12

Yes absolutely. My D.C. are seven and four and yes I still cut up grapes into quarters.

Children have died from choking on grapes and my worry is that if they weren't cut up in school lunch boxes is that if another child made them laugh, they could choke.

Takes two minutes to cut up and the safety aspect is paramount with me.

I'm the same with sausages as well.

Aprilislonggone · 29/09/2018 20:13

I cut up for ds 4 but not ds 9. A dc died at our local pizza place in recent years.

seething1234 · 29/09/2018 20:14

I still cut up my 8 year olds . If he choked on a full grape I would blame myself so it's a no brained to cut them up. There are smaller kids here if he dropped a full one it could be swallowed by toddler.

Trinpy · 29/09/2018 20:16

I cut up my 2 year old's. I'm less fussy about the 4.5 year old but he usually requests that I cut them up anyway because 'it looks like there's more grapes' Hmm.

I do always always make them sit down at the table to eat anything though, no walking around eating snacks. I think that's more of a choking risk than a grape.

divafever99 · 29/09/2018 20:17

Yes I still cut up my nearly 8 year olds grapes, takes like 2 seconds, I like a previous poster has said it only takes for them for someone to make them laugh and they could accidentally inhale. I also have a toddler and like another poster has said I would worry if there was one dropped on the floor she would probably try and eat it.

BertieBotts · 29/09/2018 20:18

No, but I taught him to bite into them.

I saw an xray of a grape stuck in a child's throat on FB today, apparently a little air could get around so the child lived, but the grape had to be removed by a surgeon.

Fishforclues · 29/09/2018 20:19

No, taught them to bite them years ago.

If nothing else can't they cut their own grapes by 7?

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 20:19

I probably wouldn’t at that age because my 3 yo. Can be trusted to bite them in half now (although generally we would cut them
Anyway) so it’s hard to imagine a 8 YO needing them cut up

BertieBotts · 29/09/2018 20:20

I can't vouch for the authenticity but I found the picture.

Do you still cut up your kids’ grapes?
whyispeppainthenightgarden · 29/09/2018 20:20

No I don’t and never have done for my 2 year old or 11 month

PerspicaciaTick · 29/09/2018 20:21

Mine cut up their own.

MsOliphant · 29/09/2018 20:21

Im a nanny, 6 and 4 year olds, no way would I not cut grapes. It’s nit worth the risk for me.

At 7, no I would not be giving them the knife to cut their own grapes Hmm it needs to be sharp, a shitty little table knife wouldn’t do it Confused

Fishforclues · 29/09/2018 20:23

A table knife is not shitty and is perfectly capable of cutting a grape.

AllTheChocolateMice · 29/09/2018 20:24

Yes still do for the 5 and 7 year old. I’ve seen enough X-rays of grapes stuck in children’s throats to not want to risk it

stressedtiredbuthappy · 29/09/2018 20:24

Jesus, shocked at people who don't cut grapes for small children!

glintandglide · 29/09/2018 20:24

Of course you can cut grapes with a shitty table knife. I cut them with butter knives or plastic knives all the time when out and about. What’s so hard about it?

glagdy · 29/09/2018 20:25

I found out they aren't as ds's preschool. Where they have kids upwards of 2.5 years. AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

MsOliphant · 29/09/2018 20:25

I don’t know really, I thought it would make a mess of the grape Grin I always use a sharp knife. I think I’m being silly now obviously Blush

Bingolingo · 29/09/2018 20:26

I do still for my 9yo, I worry he will eat his grapes for snack at break as he’s simultaneously playing football or something.

MsOliphant · 29/09/2018 20:26

I am agog at not cutting up grapes for the 11 month old. Why on earth wouldn’t you?!
