What to Charge

I have offered a friend and her 3 children to move in with me as they were about to be made homeless. I have no idea how long they might be here for, if they went into emergency housing - bedsit - you are looking at 18 months before being housed. She is looking to rent but most places want a guarantor who earns 30K, she like most doesn't have one. We have agreed that she would contribute towards food and electric etc but her kids are really fussy eaters so although I cook family meals hers barely touch some of it, so not sure if I should charge her half the food bill (there is just me and 2 kids) and I won't know what the extra gas and elect costs are until bill arrives (3 months). I have lost my single parent discount so she will reimburse me that. I own my own home so am not asking for rent. She has a lot on her plate so don't want to add to it just want to be fair.

We have no idea what usual rents are in your area, but I guess high if £30k guarantor is normal. I think you should ask her what she can afford and make sure it at least covers utilities or anything you'd be out of pocket on.

I would do food separately if at all possible, leave her with that problem.
