Quick relief of early tonsillitis?

ShirleyPhallus · 28/09/2018 07:19

I can feel it creeping up. Fever, feeling sick, start of white spots on my tonsils

People have previous posted a miracle cure here (gargling with something!) but I can’t find it - anyone got recommendations?

Gargling with aspirin?

SilverHairedCat · 28/09/2018 07:25

Dose up on lemsips, gargle with dispersible aspirin (some people swallow it - I never used to, I always spat it out as it contained infected material in my view), plenty of hot drinks like squash to keep hydration up and not OD on paracetamol!

Also buy throat spray if you have a sore throat starting.

Boil water make up a mug with a teaspoon of table salt added, leave to cool for about 15 minutes so hot still but safe to gargle. Do this about three times a day. Gargling with Dispirin is good but avoid gums, it can damage them. Also can use medicated Corsody.

Gargle every hour with dilute hydrogen peroxide (Boots about 75p) tastes vile but if it's bacterial tonsillitis it will be gone in 24hrs.

Manuka honey!!! The strongest you can get. Just hold a little bit in your mouth for as long as you can.

It works magic for me.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 28/09/2018 07:47

Manuka honey and lemon in hot water as often as you can stomach it. Freeze pineapple juice into lollies; it is my magical cure when the DC have tonsillitis, and Solpadeiene for immediate relier of pain.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/09/2018 07:51

You’re all amazing, thank you

Hydrogen peroxide was the one I was thinking of

Has anyone used corsodyl mouthwash and found a difference?

tootstastic · 28/09/2018 07:54

Yes corsadyl good for me if it's a bacterial infection

tootstastic · 28/09/2018 07:55

*corsodyl

GreenMeerkat · 28/09/2018 07:58

It depends if it's bacterial or viral. I get it a LOT and can usually tell the difference immediately as I get white spots and pus pretty much straight away when it's bacterial.

With viral I'd say get some difflam and gargle with aspirin and keep on top of paracetamol every 4 hours to keep fever under control.

With bacterial, if you know it's bacterial, go to the GP and get antibiotics as early as possible. I know the new stance on antibiotics is to leave it for a week or so to clear up on its own but bacterial tonsillitis has never cleared up without antibiotics for me so they will usually prescribe them as soon as I go in with the first spot.

MrsZB · 28/09/2018 12:46

Manuka honey works better than hydrogen peroxide imho.

Pringlemunchers · 28/09/2018 12:50

I dilute TCP and gargle it. Seems to help

jellyandsoup · 28/09/2018 13:22

If you try all these op you will have no tonsils left to worry about anyway!! Good luck tho tonsilitus sucks. Il throw mine in, iced water with loads of lime in used to help me, but probably wouldn't get rid of it.

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/09/2018 14:15

Ouch, feel for you OP- I always tend to find Difflam oral rinse the best (you'll have ask at the pharmacist for it) , salt water if I've got nothing else. Ibuprofen for the swelling of its started.

ShirleyPhallus · 29/09/2018 08:00

Thank you so much for all your suggestions

I bought some hydrogen peroxide which tastes like absolute shit, and went to the doctor for antibiotics as last time I had tonsillitis I was in hospital for it.

Thankfully it hasn’t got worse over night and the white spots on my tonsils are disappearing already.

Maybe this is because of the HP, maybe the ABs have kicked in already

Thanks all anyway!
