What would you use to put a mural on a wall?

I've got an idea for a mural I want in my flat, the landlord is fine with it as long as it can be removed or painted over. Would spray paint be out if the question? Should I use normal paint? I know nothing about decoration!

How about putting lining paper up first and then painting on top of that? Then if you have to remove it, you can just strip the paper?

Depending on the scale, normal emulsion would be ok for large areas, with acrylic maybe for details.
