Suffering with a heavy cold. Have taken paracetamol for the headache and earrache, and have cough syrup and lozenges for THE MOST ANNOYING TICKLY COUGH EVER! But it's not touching it Angry

Any tips please oh wise Mumsnetters? I'm propped up in bed. Is a hundred times worse when I lie down.

Woe is meeee!

Prop up in bed and use olbas oil or and get a Vicks plugin. Only thing I find helps.

RangeRider · 27/09/2018 06:12

Multiple cups of tea and sit up reading a book until you notice it's gone. If you're lying down you'll be thinking about it.

pumpkinpie01 · 27/09/2018 06:13

Oh how maddening ! I know vicks on the feet and socks on worked on my 5 year old the other week , hope you are better soon

Lots of water. Not instant but it helps to flush it through faster.

BretonStripe · 27/09/2018 06:16

@RangeRider please can you bring me Brew ? I like green tea with lemon and honey when my throat feels like it does right now (ie razor blades).

@MaverickSnoopy am trying to keep fluids up but it's hard when swallowing is so painful Sad

Corvonia cough lozenges are fantastic. Boots sell them, I was the same two days ago, all day all night and bought them yesterday morning, they helped me get through the day at work.

theboxofdelights · 27/09/2018 06:18

Ps they taste horrid.

AdoreTheBeach · 27/09/2018 06:18

Get yourself liquid day nurse, night nurse, covonia throat spray, lemons and honey.

During the day, take the day nurse. Gargle every so often with warm salted water. Drink a few cups throughout the day of hot water with a slice of lemon in it and heaping teaspoon of honey.

Tonight, switch to night nurse, before bed, warm salted water gargle, tea with honey and lemon, throat spray before bed. Make sure your head is elevated when sleeping. If coughing gets bad in the night, do the gargle, lemon and honey tea, then throat spray.

The gargle helps clear out anything in your throat (mucus) and works on any infection. Day/night nurse not only has the paracetamol in it, but also works on drying out what’s causing you to cough (post nasal drip?)

Throat spray really numbs yourvthroat. Helps stop the cough.

Best of luck. I had this recently for two weeks. one night I coughed so bad that I burst a blood vessel in my eye!

Gohackyourself · 27/09/2018 06:22

Phlocodeine syrup from the chemist- it’s behind counter.
It’s a basic syrup but numbs the throat too, absolutely brilliant when I had pneumonia cough last year. Pharmacist recommended.
Also buy the Vicks throat spray which numbs the back of throat about 10 mins before bed .
Finally if you feel it’s all in your throat, at the pharmacy buy Colgate’s hydrogen perioxide mouth wash which is for throat infections and gargle with that too- the peroixde kills the bacteria. Let us know!

BretonStripe · 27/09/2018 06:26

@theboxofdelights and @AdoreTheBeach thank you so much! Am cancelling any plans for today and will head straight to Boots after school drop off to stock up on all those things.

The nice tasting honey and lemon lozenges are doing naff all so don't care if the Covonia ones are rank! My Mum always used to say if it tastes good it won't be helping haha.

So just dug out the Children's Olbas Oil and normal Vicks from back of bathroom cabinet. They are 5.5yrs and 4.5yrs out of date respectively ! Have slathered the Vicks on anyway.

Have never tried Day or Night Nurse but have heard good things Smile

@Gohackyourself will add those to my list and see what the little Boots in my small town has later - thank you!

I have a mouth full of ulcers so need something to sort them.

OP posts:
Gohackyourself · 27/09/2018 06:43

The Colgate hydrogen perioxide will help sort those as it’s for mouth infections too.

An asthma inhaler, salobutomol (?) will open up the airways, it really helps me stop coughing. But I used to cough all night for 6 weeks after a cold.

Gohackyourself · 27/09/2018 06:46

Not sure if that worked ?!
It’s called Colgate peroxyl in a white bottle with blue label, normally in mouthwash/corsodyl part.
Was told to use it by specialist for recurrent throat infections

BretonStripe · 27/09/2018 06:48

@TuathaDeDanann thanks - I started taking my blue inhaler in the night. Not helped much yet.

@Gohackyourself thank you - yes it worked.

Marking place as also suffering with a terrible cold today too Sad

SlipperyLizard · 27/09/2018 07:03

Codeine works for me to suppress a tickly cough - get some nurofen plus as I think that has highest over the counter codeine. I only take it at night with a cough as codeine is addictive.

MsHomeSlice · 27/09/2018 07:08

we all had that vile germ that was nobbling the entire country last Christmas, the only thing that stopped the constant coughing and choking was Fisherman's Friends, I bought some and passed them round the car...it stank for days, but they stopped three grownups from coughing!

Meandyoumake2 · 27/09/2018 07:12

Aww I've been the same are you bringing up any phlegm? I have been taken honey, lemon and cinnamon. Two paracetamol before bed and sleeping on 4 pillows. Last night is the first night I managed to sleep more than 3 hours at a go. Started vitamin c and b and Also taken my blue inhaler. Hope you get a bit of sleep tonight!

endofthelinefinally · 27/09/2018 07:15

Go and talk to your pharmacist.
They are really helpful.

Magicstar1 · 27/09/2018 07:18

Vicks on your feet...it works for me and I've made all my family try it and it worked for them too.
Rub the Vicks into the soles of your feet and put a pair of socks on when you go to bed.

BretonStripe · 27/09/2018 07:52

Yep bringing up thick yellow/light green phlegm Envy I had asthma for most of my life so know to spit it out. So glam.

Does it matter if Vicks is 5 years out of date?! It's almost a full jar...does anyonr ever get thru a whole one?!

OP posts:
Meandyoumake2 · 27/09/2018 07:54

I'm doing the Vicks too - going doctor today though with the phlegm - you should too. I got steroids last year and they worked great! Hope you get sorted
