Thoughtful small gift for hard times.

It is the anniversary of my partners dad's death coming up and he is also suffering with depression. I would like to get him a little gift to let him know that he is loved and I'm here for him but I don't know what.
Any ideas for a small gesture?

I'm not sure a gift is really suitable. Maybe an evening in with a home cooked dinner? Glass of wine and the chance to chat if he wants to?

Thanks for the suggestions, I've offered to take him out for dinner and he said he'll see if he feels up to it so maybe a nice dinner at home will be better.
I'm not very good with emotional support and never know what to say, maybe I'll see if I can find a nice card.
