I've just shoved a jam sponge up my lady parts.

What the hell are you meant to use when tampons and mooncups are out but you have HEAVY periods and pads are so so not enough?

I bought those sea sponge menstrual sponges from the jam sponge website and am at last giving them a try.

Has anyone else tried them? Or have any suggestions of something else that's good for Periods From Hell?

Have you tried different cups? There’s now so many designs that there is something for most bodies (but won’t suit all). Mooncups scare me but I like meluna. Have you seen the YouTubed precious star pads? She explains all the different types and pros and cons. Hope the sponge works for you, they look too much like they would leak for my liking

Why can't you use menstrual cups and tampons? Can you just not get them in right/not to leak?

I never got on with tampons, could always feel them and they became uncomfortable. My moon cup was great for a while, even with stupidly heavy flow (like I had to empty every hour/hour and a half because I was overflowing), but more recently I couldn't get it to work as well. On the first couple of days I would use Dear Kate's period pants as backup.

Otherwise try maternity pads, disposable or reusable (might be more comfy)

Now gather that porn stars use make-up sponges. FML. I won't be going down that route.

I usually use a mooncup (hate the feel of tampons) but my vagina is a bastard right now. I won’t TMI you more than I already have but it’s a Sad Undercarriage and is feeling poorly. So no mooncup for the time being.

I’ve had my arctic roll in for about 3 hours now and no leaking! But I’ve been sat down most of that, need to see how it holds up when I’m out and about.

Thanks for all your help, everyone. And I’m sorry for the cake trauma. 😝

Grin. Sadly, you are right @OvO

I have read it is much easier to insert them than to remove them.

Just an update for anyone who had an interest in buying a sponge.

It hasn’t leaked at all. Not a drop! Even my mooncup would leak eventually. I actually forgot and left it in for waaaay longer than I should and I was leak free! Taking it out the first time was difficult but it’s been fine since. I’m actually really pleased with it.

Downside is that you really need to have access to a sink. No way could I do in a public loo. Least with a mooncup you can just wipe it and put it back in! But since you have 8 hours between having to change it it’s not too much of a downside. Think I’ll swap to it permanently.
