I've just shoved a jam sponge up my lady parts.

What the hell are you meant to use when tampons and mooncups are out but you have HEAVY periods and pads are so so not enough?

I bought those sea sponge menstrual sponges from the jam sponge website and am at last giving them a try.

Has anyone else tried them? Or have any suggestions of something else that's good for Periods From Hell?

I take tablets from the very beginning of my period for about 4days which eases the amount of bleeding and clots. I'll still never go without a pad with the super duper absorbent tampons but my tampons now last more than 30mins

OvO · 25/09/2018 17:49

I have Tranexamic Acid, Skinny, but it's hit and miss if it works. Some months it's a wonder pill then others it's like I shouldn't have bothered.

S'weird. Maybe if I don't take it the hour my period arrives my womb is all hahahaha fucker, too late?!

And there was I thinking who is this weirdo who finds an alternative orifice for cake and was your next line going to be a comment about it being gobbled up

Mirena coil stopped my heavy periods. Have you tried it, some side effects but for me worked brilliantly.

GerdaLovesLili · 25/09/2018 17:55

Have you tried an arctic roll?

Kbear · 25/09/2018 17:56

there is something my doc prescribed me and DD - mefanemic acid - this is apparently an anti imflammatory and also helps with heavy blood loss

enjoy your jam sponge experiment and pray for the menopause !

Rebecca36 · 25/09/2018 18:00

Please don't ever offer anyone a slice of cake, ever again.

Cut up an old towel, fold so it's thick and safety pin into your knickers, wear another pair of pants on top. That should suffice until you can get to the shops.

cakesandphotos · 25/09/2018 18:02

I think they can sometimes have bits of the sea floor in them because they’re so hard to sterilise. I would be wary I think

AltogetherAndrews · 25/09/2018 18:03

Lemon drizzle would sting a bit, surely

WrongKindOfFace · 25/09/2018 18:03

Have you tried disposable incontience pants? I know some women swear by then after giving birth so presume they can cope.

bigKiteFlying · 25/09/2018 18:04

www.cheekywipes.com/cloth-sanitary-pad-kits/period-pants-4-layer.html

I haven't bought yet but have seen theses suggested as alternative to THINX.

Also seen www.modibodi.co.uk/product-category/underpants/ . I love the idea of their swim suits not the prices - way out of my budget.

mefanemic acid - GPS also mentioned that to me then decided on the pill again and again - which I then had side affects with.

However I did find a cure 3 pg and bf meaning no periods for 5 half years - that sorted me out - though last few years I've started having odd bad month or two again.

OvO · 25/09/2018 18:05

Rebecca, I don't need to get to the shops. I can't use tampons or a mooncup right now and the shops sell bugger all else.

I was reading about that earlier, cakes, but I'm desperate so fingers crossed mine is okay!

Arctic roll? Has this dm been to Iceland?!

TonnoEMaionese · 25/09/2018 18:06

Surely you need something dry, so it gets wetter.. perhaps a sponge finger....

In any case, I, too have the mooncup not being sufficient on the first couple of days (only since second child... it's odd how these things change), I just can't see how it's going to be sanitary to use a sponge though - how are you going to get it sensibly clean?

I do similar to Rebecca - on the heavy days I stay close to home and go old school with a folded cheap ikea flannel - more comfortable than a sticky pad, and I can bleach the fuck out of them once I'm done (plus, it all feels a bit odd down there during my period, and having a stack of flannels I can damp with cold water and have a good wash makes it all more pleasant... I have a bidet, but flannels just feel nicer)

OvO · 25/09/2018 18:06

Kite, this look great, much more affordable! Thank you.

FreezerBird · 25/09/2018 18:08

Mini rolls, that's what you need OP.

NTitled · 25/09/2018 18:14

Do you put it in a 90 degree wash?

ACatsNoHelpWithThat · 25/09/2018 18:14

I recently discovered heavy absorbency incontinence pads for my totm (currently awaiting a hysterectomy due to heavy periods). Not the most comfortable things in the world but it's the first time in ages I've not leaked onto the bedsheets at night.

NTitled · 25/09/2018 18:21

I am now back from Google (via several BBC Food recipes) and am thoroughly over-invested in this thread.

Can you use them with cervical prolapses, I wonder? If so, I am going to try them. I can't believe you can have sex with them in (this has rather swung it for me). Grin

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 25/09/2018 18:22

Well that's a.vision I won't lose in a hurry, I bet the mumsnet mods span round in their mods mobile pretty damn quickly too 😂😂😂

kierenthecommunity · 25/09/2018 18:27

I googled them —after reading an ask me anything thread about working girls using them— completely out of the blue, and also read about them being full of sand and shells etc Shock

The minky sanitary pads from Cheeky Wipes are good

kierenthecommunity · 25/09/2018 18:27

And cocked up on the crossing out feature there 😂 is this website ever going to get an edit function?

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 25/09/2018 18:28

Surely lady fingers are the lady bits baking of choice?

Otherwise I second the merina if you're looking for a longer term intervention. I was leaking through maternity pads until I got mine, now I'm barely spotting.

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 25/09/2018 18:40

I will not be Googling.....

Justkeeprollingalong · 25/09/2018 18:53

New to Mumsnet, had never even heard of of a Mooncup (fertility days well behind me!)
