Laughs in the Classroom

I'm long retired now but I till laugh to myself when I remember things that happened when I was teaching.

Something I read today reminded me of one such moment. We'd been talking about schools in Victorian times for a project and they'd been using slates and learning copperplate writing. They asked me about punishments and I told them about the cane and the dunce's cap. I also remembered being told that teachers used to draw a circle on the blackboard and the naughty child had to stand with their nose in the circle. I drew a circle on the blackboard to show them.

I turned around to a forest of hands volunteering to be punished.

They were very disappointed when I wouldn't let them form an orderly queue.

My fav was when a pupil did a talk on a western film and stated several times that it was filmed in the town of Technicolor. I got the giggles and couldn't stop. I was doing that silent shaking thing and had actual tears running.
