Other than ‘how delightful’ and ‘darling’.

How the devil are you?

LilithTheKitty · 25/09/2018 12:05

Well I didn't know sweetie and lovely were posh. Apparently I'm posh now Grin.

delphguelph · 25/09/2018 12:06

^

PLEASE, no not again!

(anyone noticed that paragraphs are now working?)

RomanyRoots · 25/09/2018 12:07

My daughter says Gosh, and Golly quite a bit, I blame the school tbh, she's caught posh, I did warn her. Grin

Blinkingblimey · 25/09/2018 12:08

Oh dear or sweet depending on the sort of awww required. Dear or darling for for ‘hun’.

RomanyRoots · 25/09/2018 12:09

Posh (defined)

Originates from the richest people on ship could afford the expensive tickets of Port side out and starbound home.
It was to make sure they got the best of the sun on both journeys.

Once over heard a conversation, posh woman with an east end boyfriend, think Danny Dyer. He hollered what we doing the weekend babe and her silver spoon in mouth response was I do not know what the fuck you are fucking doing, darling

borntobequiet · 25/09/2018 12:15

Sweet (in a flat tone usually). Dearest.

TheOrigBrave · 25/09/2018 12:16

(anyone noticed that paragraphs are now working?)

Oh! I thought it was my keyboard.

Verbena37 · 25/09/2018 12:16

I’m not ‘posh’ but there have been times that I’ve lived in situations that some might say we’re posh.
I would say (and still say) “oh gosh!” But I also say “blimey!l.

Never in a month of Sunday’s though, would I ever say “Hun”.
Ever Grin

Verbena37 · 25/09/2018 12:18

Oh and terms of endearment, I use sweetie or poppet.

Dumbledoresgirl · 25/09/2018 12:19

I guess I must be bordering posh by national standards.

I write awww, but I would never say it. Gosh is my go to polite exclamation.

For terms of endearment, I grew up with dear and darling. I prefer to use sweetie.

Starlings27 · 25/09/2018 12:20

Darling, Sweetheart, Precious for Hun

Not sure in what context you're using "Aww"? If you mean e.g., "Ahh, isn't she cute?" it would probably be "Oh, how lovely!" or similar.

Racecardriver · 25/09/2018 12:20

Darling is posh? You learn something every day. I don't know what other people say but I say awe or oh how precious or something like that. Ebdearnmentswisr it's darling, my darling, my love (never just love), sweetheart, my dear, pumpkin. If I am bring sarcastic I say aww didums.

Davespecifico · 25/09/2018 12:21

As an aside, when posh people have said, “Well done you!” to me, I can’t tell you how excruciatingly patronised it makes me feel.

OP posts:
Davespecifico · 25/09/2018 12:22

Aww is for cute things, acknowledging milestones and for sad things.

OP posts:
bookworm14 · 25/09/2018 12:22

'Posh' is not an acronym for 'Port Out, Starboard Home'. That's a myth.

Starlings27 · 25/09/2018 12:23

Posh (defined)

No, that's a fake etymology. HTH

RiverOrange · 25/09/2018 12:23

I must be posh. I say all the so called posh words and have never said or needed to say, ‘hun’. Detest it.

PleaseJustSayNo · 25/09/2018 12:23

Well! If expletives are directly indicative of class and poshness then they best get me a fucking room in Buckingham Palace!

RomanyRoots · 25/09/2018 12:23

Daves

I agree, "Well done you" is condescending, almost like the person is surprised that you are capable of doing the basic thing you've just done.

Dumbledoresgirl · 25/09/2018 12:23

Yes, context is everything. What is the context for awww?

Looking at a baby photo, I would say ahhhhh
Being told someone has 2 months to live, I would say oh gosh, I'm so sorry, or something similar.

Davespecifico · 25/09/2018 12:24

Darling is posh when those who say it aren’t in love or family e.g. work colleagues or friends or just anyone.
The Hotel Inspector says it to everyone she meets.

OP posts:
Racecardriver · 25/09/2018 12:24

I was taught not yo say gosh because it was to god and fudge is to fuck. I say oh my god not oh my gosh and I definitely say fuck and not fudge. I never ask anyone to pardon my French (unless I am actually speaking French my French is awful so apologies are necessary)

MargaretDribble · 25/09/2018 12:26

bookworm you beat me to it.
I think 'posh' as a term is relative. When I first moved here I was told people didn't like me because I was 'too posh'. Lots of people like me now, so I must have changed. 😉
