Other than ‘how delightful’ and ‘darling’.

Now this has me thinking. I wonder what the equivalent is for "my lovely"?

happypoobum · 25/09/2018 11:40

I don't know what awww means either!!

tillytrotter1 · 25/09/2018 11:43

Glad it's not just me, thought I was in a parallel universe! What's 'aww'?

PS Glad to see that the carriage return problem's solved!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 25/09/2018 11:44

My v. posh Mum used to call us Hun (Hon) but she was Canadian.

TheSheepofWallSt · 25/09/2018 11:45

ExDP terribly posh. My life had been spent moving in v posh circles, but I’m working class.

Gosh, or ISN’T that xyz “isn’t that terrible/ lovely/ adorable” etc

Darling. Love. Occasional sweetheart or dearest.

NameChanger22 · 25/09/2018 11:45

My grandma was posh. She used to call everyone little chickens.

VeryBerrySeptember · 25/09/2018 11:46

I don't know aww either.

Is it like a northern "Aaah!" a sympathetic filler?

Remember sometimes there is no translation. I think thats true of "love" and "my lovely" to those you don't know well, if at all!

Pemba · 25/09/2018 11:46

Aww is the sound you typically make when you see cute puppies, kittens, or little children of course, and especially when they do something funny and cute. This can extend to other categories of people or animals.

Or a sympathetic noise. eg someone tells you 'Mrs Jones next door had a fall and has gone into hospital'. You might reply: 'Aww, poor lady, I hope she gets well soon'.

FermatsTheorem · 25/09/2018 11:47

"Aww" is one of those words that's really context-dependent.

"Aww" on being shown photo of someone's toddler = "how adorable"

"Aww, hun" (dependent on tone of voice), on hearing someone's been ill all week = "sorry to hear that"

Etc.

JingsMahBucket · 25/09/2018 11:48

@NameChanger22 that's really cute and sweet.

Miladymilord · 25/09/2018 11:49

On hearing someone's been ill all week: (slightly disgusted face) "oh dear" (changes subject)

GetOffTheTableMabel · 25/09/2018 11:49

Oh, well for puppies etc, I would probably say ‘oh, sweet!’. I think for Mrs Jones had a fall, I’d typically say ‘what a shame’.

citiesofbismuth · 25/09/2018 11:50

I'm stuck in the 1970s so I say lovey or chuck.

MargaretDribble · 25/09/2018 11:53

First define posh.
I say gosh a lot and DH calls me darling. He also calls me Petal.Blush

Davespecifico · 25/09/2018 11:53

Here in Salford, awww can also be spelt orrr.

MarthasGinYard · 25/09/2018 11:55

Adorable

Super darling

QuaterMiss · 25/09/2018 11:55

I’ve never seen The Only way Is Essex and have been a bit puzzled about how “aww” is pronounced ...

userblah · 25/09/2018 11:56

Is this lighthearted?! I don't understand the purpose of the thread

I think I'm just over sensitive when someone's called posh or they call me posh......I always take it as a criticism

missmouse101 · 25/09/2018 11:57

Since when did ahhh get replaced by awww ? Very annoying.

Doobigetta · 25/09/2018 11:57

Awww is just what you say when you run out of things to say about someone’s baby/toddler photos. I see too many of these to be picky about class indicators, I chuck in anything I can think of. I’d be fucked without emotions.

MargaretCavendish · 25/09/2018 11:59

As a relative posho, I feel like I say 'oh no, sweetheart' when people might say 'awww, hun' and 'oh he's adorable' when people might say 'awww he's adorable' - or am I misunderstanding 'aww' here?

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 25/09/2018 12:01

I say ahh rather than aww as in ahh how cute. Or in a sad voice ahh that's terrible.
However I've never said hun in my life, I hope I don't start.

RangeRider · 25/09/2018 12:01

I'm not remotely posh but I've never said aww or hun!

TheOrigBrave · 25/09/2018 12:03

I never know whether it's hun or hon when written down so I think I've failed on that one.

I do saw awwwww, so I guess I'm not posh. Or maybe 'adorable' or 'lovely'. For hun/hon I would say 'lovely'

Tartyflette · 25/09/2018 12:04

(channelling Patsy Stone)
aww -- Pull disgusted face. (esp if toddler or baby related, in which case add 'time to cut the cord, darling')
hun -- Sweetie. Or sweetie darling.
