If you are one of those people who are nearly always cold what do you wear to keep you warm?

The older I get the colder I seem to get(50). I layer up. I've already got the thermals out. Where I work is always cold .are there any really good base layers/ socks that actually work?

Layers layers layers. Crop top instead of bra (only works if you have no boobs, like me!), vest top under normal top, sometimes long sleeved t-shirt as well.

Primark do great thermal tights & leggings that are my saviour in the winter. Good for underneath joggers at home as well.

I also rock the fingerless gloves look at work, if I'm studying at home or in the car. Ones made for walking / camping are best I find.

NotCitrus · 25/09/2018 13:31

Silk vest, poloneck tops, wool socks over cotton socks. I want a traditional pointy nightcap, but improvise with a blanket.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 25/09/2018 13:48

I wear these at home - sheepskin, £9.80 on Amazon. They are super cosy and also make you look slinky and attractive. That last bit is not true.

Microwave heated bean bags over the top of your feet (or if you can get away with it heated slipper boots) and also I used to have fingerless gloves that plugged into my work USB port and heated to. I’ve got Raynauld’s so even though it looks a bit unprofessional, my employer agreed it was a reasonable adjustment.

MotherofPearl · 25/09/2018 13:52

I second Crumpet's hot water bottle suggestion. I work from home a lot and nearly always have one on my feet or lap - or both! - during the cooler months. You can also buy mini hot water bottles which are more portable and very cosy in your coat pockets!

thenightsky · 25/09/2018 14:01

Hot water bottles for feet. I cannot sleep if I have cold feet. Face under the duvet to keep nose warm too.

Hot water bottle over feet when watching telly too. I did find some microwavable slippers in TKMaxx that are great, but don't stay hot as long as the old fashioned bottle.

Once my nose and feet are cold, there's no warming up again without an outside source of heat. I can pile a hundred pairs of socks on my cold feet, but that would just keep the cold IN.

ChristmasIsMyFavourite · 25/09/2018 14:05

What about cold toes? I can have hot feet in my uggs but my toes will still be cold-even if my feet are sweating.

MaMisled · 25/09/2018 14:10

I lost 4 and 1/2 stone and was miserably cold last winter! Layers is the answer! Bra, vest top, long sleeve cotton top then a jumper. When I walk the dogs I add 2 more pairs of socks, leggings under my jeans, a fleece, a coat then a body warmer. For my hands I bought rechargeable pebble shaped handwarmers from Ebay. £10 each and worth it. I wear 2 pairs of thermal thin gloves, A woolly hat and a big cotton scarf wrapped round and round!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 25/09/2018 14:14

Have you tried these, Christmas? They last all day and saved my toes last winter. You can get them for about 80p a pair of you shop around.

ChristmasIsMyFavourite · 25/09/2018 14:18

tawdry No! But I have used the hand version. Thank you- I’ll have a look.

Roomba · 25/09/2018 14:47

Reading with interest although I'm usually the sort that moans it's too hot, sorry! But I have no central heating and cannot bear another winter as miserable as last year 1so all this advice will hopefully come in really handy!

V worried as I read that we are looking at four months of Beast From The East type weather this winter. Not sure how to cope with that - I'm amused to see someone actually made themselves a knitted nose warmer because I seriously considered doing just that in March this year Grin

SandraTheBee · 25/09/2018 18:04

I am sitting in my own house with a thermal vest, jumper and gilet on and my feet are absolutely frozen, as are my fingertips. all day at work- which is in a school btw- I have had the thermal, jumper, gilet, plus a neck warmer and wrist warmers And I was cold all day long.
I stomp round the place slamming windows shut and muttering about lunatics opening windows.
it doesn't help that there are quite a few menopausal women there having hot flushes.
I must be menopausal at nearly 51 but I have never had a hot flush. I think I am incapable of feeling over heated.
I went to Marrakech this summer and only when they temp hit 50 did I start to feel really uncomfortable.
In all probability I am the lunatic.
Going into uniqlo website. At this rate I will be wearing multiple thermal vests.
The scarves are coming out of the cupboard.

Getting exercise daily is good, a good dose of overheating ideally. I am also 51 & feel wistful about how nice hot flushes could be!!
--Sitting next to fire with hat, gloves, & 2-3 layers everywhere else.

EarlyModernParent · 26/09/2018 06:18

Sandra, the only benefit of menopause to me is that the frequent hot flushes mean I am not cold all the time in winter. It is bliss.

SandraTheBee · 26/09/2018 06:40

Early I cn quite well believe that. I am currently mourning the slow but steady loss of my mane of hair.

Also I invested in a pair of uggs to keep purely as slippers a few years ago. Best slippers I ever had and will last me years.. If you have stairs you really shouldn’t wear slippers with a soft sole. It’s dangerous.

theboxofdelights · 26/09/2018 07:32

Ugg Brooks boots with proper walking socks inside, I find that if my feet are toasty then I am usually warmer.

I ordered some ugg slippers last week which didn't fit so returned them, then I found the Footway site and bought Shepherd slippers (have had them before they are fab), two pairs of Shepherds for the price of a pair of Ugg slippers! I won't be winning any style awards (yet again.

Direct from Sweded, I ordered on Sunday and they were due to be delivered yesterday but I changed it because there was no one here!

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/09/2018 08:25

Pretty basic, but I wear a vest about 4 months out of 8. And then layer up over that. A warm, close-fitting vest keeps me in good stead, and I'm generally freezing without it. I also hate tops riding up - that instantly makes me cold. A long vest tucked in stops that.

I have a heap of them in black, white, navy and nude.

I also find a scarf around my neck, if I'm even vaguely chilly, really, really helps.

I hate the cold.

MistressDeeCee · 26/09/2018 08:43

Thermals, top & bottom
Sheepskin insoles
I wear a neck scarf if I'm working somewhere cold
You can buy a handwarmer for £3 or so, you clasp it between your palms..squishy thing you warm up in the microwave, it has some kind of gel in it and stays hot for ages

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/09/2018 09:25

I seem to remember from last year several people recommending the Uniqlo heattech velvet leggings, so have ordered a couple of pairs. Already have several of the tops and leggings.

Sweettoothfairy · 26/09/2018 09:38

OP have you ever been tested for thyroid problems? I am always cold too and was diagnosed with an under active thyroid 20 years ago. Taking medication for it (other more serious symptoms too) but not made much difference tbh.
Yesterday it was 13* and I had a jumper, thick sweatshirt and padded jacket on and still a bit chilly lol.

HoraceWimpIsThisYourLife · 26/09/2018 09:40

Something that helps me is holding my hands in warm/hot water until the chill is completely gone. If I keep doing a half arsed attempt but not getting to the completely warm point I just end up freezing soon after

macnab · 26/09/2018 09:52

@2BorNot2Bvocal could you please link to the wellies you got

PurpleArmy · 26/09/2018 09:57

I have found my people. Smile

Wool socks, sheepskin boots, layers of wool including tank tops and short sleeve jumpers. Heated slanket on the sofa, - pricey but bliss. I make wrist warmers out of my worn out wool socks too.
M and s heat tech leggings under fleece lined joggers.

Uniqlo is great for proper long down costs too.

I was researching fleece lined gloves at the end of August Confused. I had some sheepskin ones but lost them and they didn't cover my wrists properly anyway. I'm looking at the heatholders website- bliss!
