Is it a massive PITA which will end up all over my house or does it do what it promises and stays together in one mass? Are there any brands better than others?

It’s not too bad. I find it less messy than playdoh.
Also it’s not really sticky so doesn’t stick on the bottom of shoes, or to hair or wallpaper!
If all else fails you can sweep up like sand.

It doesn’t really stay together 100% of the time though.
You can press it into a ball and cut shapes out of it, but if you pick it up it can also run like sand between your fingers.
If it’s fallen from the table onto the floor then it ends up being more sand than solid mass.
