As in the Greek god? It's in my 5 year old's reading book, and I don't know...and I have googled and found three different answers.

I have always said di-on-eye-sis. I’m questioning it now.

Sus not sis. Ah good. It’s the same as others.

tryingtotakeitonboard · 24/09/2018 20:14

I would say dye-on-ees-us but I’m probably wrong!

Nissemand · 24/09/2018 20:15

Die-on eye-sus.

OrchidInTheSun · 24/09/2018 20:16

Die on EYE sus
Stress on the eye

calpop · 24/09/2018 20:16

Id say die-on-eye-cis no idea why though.

Courtney555 · 24/09/2018 20:18

In England, I would say Dye On Eye Sus. Although I did stay at a hotel under that name in Rhodes, and they pronounced it Dee On Eee Sus.

EyUpOurKid · 24/09/2018 20:19

Die-on-eye-sus or Die-on-knee-sus. Have had classics teachers who pronounced it both ways.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 24/09/2018 20:20

As others, die on EYE sus.

Thanks all. It's one of those words which I have seen written down but never had the need to say out loud... Until now!

In a 5 year old's book?

AdoraBell · 24/09/2018 20:27

I think it’s Die on Eye sus too.

Sportsnight · 24/09/2018 20:27

Di-oh-NY-sus

AdoraBell · 24/09/2018 20:28

And YY to bo de see a. Clearly showing my age 😁

PhilODox · 24/09/2018 20:29

I say dee-ON- ee-s's. But I have noticed that on the radio etc they say Dye-o-nye-sus. I probably got my pronunciation from my father, but he did do higher school cert Greek, so I'm guessing pronunciation has changed over the last 80 years.

I think you need to Tweet Mary Beard for the definitive answer.

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 24/09/2018 20:30

@hollow - Biff, chip and kipper have a magic key which takes them back to ancient Greece where they meet King midas and dionysus. King midas turns floppy into gold. Sad

BoreOfWhabylon · 24/09/2018 20:33

Mary Beard sometimes posts here. @MaryBeard - can you help here please?

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 24/09/2018 20:33

Oh Floppy! No Floppy! Grin

TeenTimesTwo · 24/09/2018 20:35

I liked the magic key books. Not very phonics friendly though for a 5yo!

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 24/09/2018 20:36

It's OK Ellen, they turn him back into a dog again at the end Grin
