Doorstep sellers -

Just had a guy at the door wanting to sell me his 'wares' Said it was part of a community rehab programme - he had been a bit of a bad lad in the past and is trying to better himself. Is this still a thing? I have just moved into a new area and perhaps it's more common around here. I did feel guilty for turning him away but a) I was in my own home relaxing musmnetting and b) from memory the stuff they sell is overpriced and rubbish.

Read about this recently - it's a total scam. I wouldn't worry just a polite no with a smile and close the door.

legolimb · 24/09/2018 16:49

Yes - I didn't think it could have been genuine. He was polite - and had a mate with him at another door. I wonder if they get any sales ?

Yes they are always polite as obvs you wouldn't buy from a misery.Personally I think you did find sending them on their way. Congrats on your new home btw.

Nottingham Knockers I believe they are known as.

JasperCopeland · 24/09/2018 17:18

I think police and or trading standards are interested in hearing if they are working an area, to avoid vulnerable people being conned.

AwkwardSquad · 24/09/2018 17:46

Yes, what Jasper said. They’re a scam, and can be casing for potentially vulnerable people/properties. Inform police or Trading Standards.

I had one the other day who said he had a speech impediment and was selling stuff to pay for treatment. It was amazing how quickly his impediment went when I said 'no thanks' and he gave me a load of verbal abuse!

www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/doorstep-pedlars - Yes Nottingham Knockers. I always report them to the local Police.

legolimb · 24/09/2018 18:02

oh - i will contact trading standards then and report it. There are quite a lot of elderly people on this street who may appear more vulnerable and an easy sell. Thanks for all replies.
