Name that 80s film?

Can anyone help?
I’m pretty sure it’s an 80s film. It’s about a couple who I think get to adopt a child and then something happens which means they get the child taken away before the adoption is complete.

It’s a very serious and well acted film, quite well known I think and the main scene is heartbreaking.

Any ideas?

This Child Is Mine?

Was it one with Jane Fonda? Can't remember the film name but she was in one that was shown on TV recently, would have been 1980s. She and husband adopt a baby girl, the birth mother gets her back some three years later.

There is a old film called Penny Serenade, it’s back and white, Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, so I don’t think it’s the one, but if you need a cry I recommend it.
