If you were going to buy your first pair of Doc Martins and you were almost 40

Which pair would you choose?

I’m lusting after these www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/p/11822207 in green but my sensible head is saying that I should get them in brown as they would go with everything I’m likely to wear them with and would be easier to look after.

Decisions!

@Iruka I came across these on eBay last night of it’s any use? @iwentawayistayedaway you should list them on eBay, we’ll fight for them Grin

I have heard they are hard to break in so I was admiring these beauties yesterday. What a gorgeous colour 😍

Damn this thread! I read it this morning, fell in love with the pair Reaa linked on the first page, have been browsing websites and fallen in love with several other pairs now. If only I had a few hundred pairs to spend. I am mid 30s, have been wearing docs for years. I basically only wear Dr Martens, my work shoes are black lace-up shoes, and at home I wear boots in black or blue or purple (DH couldn't understand why I would need the beautiful metallic purple ones in the link as well as the ones I already have).

Metheven · 24/09/2018 18:18

I bought a pair of purple glitter doc martens at the grand old age of 51. I love them, who cares what other people think?

SymphonyofShadows · 24/09/2018 20:30

I've got loads, the ones I've bought more recently have been less bitey for some reason. I've got the Joy Division ones but haven't really worn them yet. They seem quite manageable though. My current favourites are the Joyce with leopard heart.

ChishandFips33 · 24/09/2018 21:08

Haha Wrenika I read your post as pornographic pink!!

ChishandFips33 · 24/09/2018 21:10

Redblu I sometimes ask a friend to wear my shoes in! I wear insoles so often can't get shoes on with them in and can't wear them to stretch them without them in...cue helpful friend Grin

ChishandFips33 · 24/09/2018 21:12

Those teal ones are gorgeous! tempted

WatchingFromTheWings · 24/09/2018 21:22

I'm 42 and recently bought these!

There's a zip on the inside leg so you don't have to lace them up every time you put them on!

I've also got a pair of the sensible shoes for work. I've had to go down a size for both.

Also, if you've not already ordered, sign up to the mailing list first. They send you a money off voucher!

Done, great tip!

@Whatthefoxgoingon

Still size 5 but from the youth section of the website. It’s a range aimed at teenagers which go from size 3 to 5.5 (normal uk sizes). Not as much choice but still a lot of the classic style. They look the same but the leather is a little softer (which I prefer) and the boots tend to have a zip up the side.

PestymcPestFace · 24/09/2018 21:42

Methe I got the soft leather teal ones at the weekend. Have worn them all day today and they were comfy. At 52 I am too old to break a pair in but not too old to wear them.

Can someone help me with sizing? I wear thick socks in the winter so should I go .5 bigger?

JustCallMeDave · 24/09/2018 21:54

My friend swears by heating them with a hairdryer. I think it’s this lifehacker.com/break-in-a-pair-of-shoes-in-minutes-with-a-hair-dryer-1758845075 method. Having worn Dr Martens endlessly as a teen, when I went to try some on a while ago I found that since having dc my feet are even wider and docs don’t fit me anymore Sad. Gutted.

Tobermory · 24/09/2018 21:57

I bought my first pair last year, aged 45... though my youngest DD is convinced I’m only 32. I’ll put her right at some point! Those chrome ones look amazing, especially the purple... also love the black glitter...might be about to buy my second pair! Do it OP, you won’t regret it!

CountFosco · 24/09/2018 22:02

I had a green pair in the 90s. I wore them to a Cambridge college ball under a tartan ballgown. Happy Days!

mogloveseggs · 24/09/2018 22:03

Go for it! Get the ones you want. These are mine, bought with hard earned Christmas overtime money and i adore them.

This is my thread Grin

I'm planning to order these at the age of 39 as my first ever pair of DMs at age 13 were navy. I then had a black pair and never quite felt the love for black.

I've had zip up DMs for five years and the soles are as new but the zip is a bit temperamental (and the front are knackered after kneeling through playgroups!) so I've decided to go with the original boot, but in a softer leather. My zip up ones are navy and I have navy polish so it works for me.

All other shoes seem so damn narrow around the toes but DMs actually have space for my feet.

IceBearRocks · 24/09/2018 22:27

Got my first Doc's aged 11.... Because I'm a great parent my kids were 4 and 8.... Greens were my favourite but 42.... I've just bought purple leather ones ..I love em..... Don't buy black unless you HAVE to!

CalmConfident · 24/09/2018 22:31

I have gray Pascal's which have been brilliant. Still in mourning for the green suede pair I had at uni...they got lost somewhere in my 20s. I am 43

BellMcEnd · 24/09/2018 22:35

DMs are God’s gift to feet. I’ve lived in them since I was 18 and I’m now 43. They are ace. I have about 6 pairs but 4 of them years old. They last forever and ime go with everything. I’m currently lusting over these wondrous ones ........
