If you were going to buy your first pair of Doc Martins and you were almost 40

Which pair would you choose?

I’m lusting after these www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/p/11822207 in green but my sensible head is saying that I should get them in brown as they would go with everything I’m likely to wear them with and would be easier to look after.

Decisions!

Completely off topic but what size feet do you have? I'm a 5 and recently found out I can buy from there 'youth' range, at about half the adult price.

Gardai · 24/09/2018 07:55

I wore them many years ago but I bought a new pair in a charity shop recently (the softer ones) and I had forgotten how comfortable they are. Mine are black and look good with black skinnies.
The benefit of docs is that they are waterproof, comfy and warm
I’m 10 years old than you OP Shock

I just bought my first pair at age 53! Got cherry red Pascals- only for my 14 year old daughter with the same size feet to start bleating about how I know she's ALWAYS wanted Docs. She was in tears over it and I caved and gave them to her. (Yes. I am a mug). So now I have a super pair of glossy cherry red Flora Chelsea boots instead which, in hindsight, are actually a better 'look' for me and my wardrobe. Daughter , meanwhile, hasn't worn hers yet so I may still get them back.

I got the soft leather ones this time last year and they didn't need any breaking in at all. They're sooooo comfy!!!

DMCWelshCakes · 24/09/2018 10:16

I started with a black glittery pair when I was about 35.

I'm now up to 4 pairs and the last ones were turquoise.

Buy the green OP. They get addictive anyway!

Sallystyle · 24/09/2018 10:27

I wanted the purple chrome but when I tried them on the burgundy won hands down.

PatriciaHolm · 24/09/2018 10:28

DD has those! they are fab. I have the cherry red heeled ones...

Yoksha · 24/09/2018 10:38

Age is no factor. In all things 'shoes', one must follow one's ❤.

spiderlight · 24/09/2018 11:25

I desperately, desperately want these.

Haworthia · 24/09/2018 11:30

I DEFINITELY recommend getting the softer leather ones. I still remember the agony of breaking in stiff leather Docs in my teens. Bought some Hadleys two years ago and they were comfy from day one.

Dhalandchips · 24/09/2018 11:33

Just beat in my Nd that they're a bastard to wear in 😊 I've not worn anything else since 1982

Dhalandchips · 24/09/2018 11:34

Oh holy fuck predictive text!

Just bear in mind

Which size does size 5 translate to in the youth range, pretty please? Asking for a friend Grin

Miranda79 · 24/09/2018 12:29

Go green! I have a pair of black ones that are 20 years old with purple laces that are still fab (but with inner soles added to be fair). I also have black pull ons and a fab pair of blue and pink patterned canvas ones. They are great once you wear them in and will end up by far the cheapest boots you own(by wear). My biggest regret is that my calves are too big for the high black with red flowers on, I can’t zip them up Sad

AamdC · 24/09/2018 13:59

Just be warned if you buy purple velvet ones like i had a 21 the velvet rips very easily i did love those boots thoughSad How much thoughShock last time a bought a pair of Docs which was admittedly at least 20 years ago i paid about £40/50 !

Iruka · 24/09/2018 15:13

I have a pair of brown fleece lined ones that I get very upset about being too warm to wear in summer Grin. The fleece is getting worn down so I looked around for a new pair last winter and it looks like they don't do them anymore Sad

wrenika · 24/09/2018 16:47

The joy of docs is getting them in manic colours. I have one pair in purple and gold, one pair of high heeled boots in red, and my absolutely favourite pair in holographic pink!

RomanyRoots · 24/09/2018 16:49

mine are bright red and I'm 52, go with what you like.i'd love those green ones but can't afford them Sad

wrenika · 24/09/2018 16:54

These are my absolute favourite boots ever, and I pair them with this irregular choice bag. I'm 29...I have no intention of growing old gracefully!

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 24/09/2018 17:32

I have size 7 purple ones. Very rarely worn. You are very welcome to them.....

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 24/09/2018 17:32

Purple leather btw

RedBlu · 24/09/2018 17:34

I have a black patent pair brand new that I have had for a year and I never worn.

Every time I put them on I am reminded that I still need to break them in..... Sad

I listed them on eBay last night but I have doubts about getting rid of them - but I have no idea how to break them in without destroying my feet

mothertominibeasts · 24/09/2018 17:35

I'm 40 next March and I have never owned a pair of DMs. I have started looking though, I didn't realise there was so much choice! Smile

Russell19 · 24/09/2018 17:37

Don't know if it's just me but I found them the most painful shoes to wear in! Top of my foot was in agony x
