How long are entilted to free dental care after you have had a baby!

Hi, just a wee quick question, I have had an ongoing dental problem which I’ve been receiving free dental care for during my pregnancy and since the birth of my son, I’ve had to be referred to a specialist clinic and have undergone ct scans and assessments which have all being paid for as I’m still entitled to free dental care!! However my son turns 1 on the Wednesday and I have to go for dental surgery on the friday (2days after his birthday)! Does this mean I have to pay for this surgery as he will already have turned one, or will it be paid for part of ongoing treatment! Anything I tried to read online just mentions that your entitled to free dental care for 12months after baby is born!! Apologies about the rant!! Just worried about the added expense of it all, as I’m just back to work after Mat leave and funds are tight!!

I think anything after 12 months is chargeable.

When I asked the dentist as I had a lot of dental work needed, she said well you have had the whole of your pregnancy free as well. Unfortunately I then had to pay again as the dentist messed it up.

It’s 12 months after your due date if you didn’t change the date on your maternity exemption card. Look at your card. You will need to show it to get free treatment and the expiry date is on there.

My dentist told me that any ongoing treatment will be covered in full. So if they say you need 2 fillings and a root canal over a month, all these treatments will be covered as long as initial consultation was within the year

On going treatment after the 12 months should be covered too.

Also, I had a filling replaced during my free period that went wrong again afterwards and he did another replacement for free.

in scotland it is 12 months from date of birth not due date but provided course of treatment is started the whole course is covered, a course of treatment should normally be completed within 3 months of start date, if you miss an appointment your dentist can send course away as incomplete if you then return it will be new course and you won't be exempt, be careful re cancelling appointments as if delay too long it will pass 3 months line and your dentist will send course away for payment,
if we delay sending form away they refuse to pay us even for what is complete so we will not keep a form open for more than 3 months since last visit in fact to make sure we don't miss deadline we send anything away when pt has not been in for 10 weeks
