I've messed up - Lemsip while pregnant

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and have developed a horrible cold over the last couple of days. DH has been fantastic looking after me, and yesterday and this morning has been making me Lemsips.

I don't know why I didn't think to check, I had it in my head that it was just paracetamol, but I googled just now and realised that you're not allowed to have Lemsip in pregnancy because of the decongestants.

I've fucked up, haven't I? Have I hurt my baby? She's still active and moving as normal but I just feel so rotten. I'm a shit mum and she's not even born yet.

You haven't hurt your baby from a couple of lemsips. Most of this stuff is just caution because there's no way of testing because you can't test on pregnant woman.

Just don't have any more and speak to your midwife for some reassurance if you need it.

HerRoyalFattyness · 23/09/2018 11:34

You've not fucked up.
I did exactly the same thing and my midwife reassured me all would be fine.
If you are concerned just give them a ring. They won't mind putting your mind at rest Flowers

There is an ingredient in it that can restrict blood flow to the placenta. Call your midwife to be sure.

Please don't worry, you haven't harmed your baby Flowers

You should try to avoid decongestants while breastfeeding as it can affect your supply but as you're still pregnant, I wouldn't worry about it.

ButterflyWitch · 23/09/2018 11:36

Omg honestly you and baby have not been harmed by taking lemsip.

PirateWeasel · 23/09/2018 11:38

No no no, you are NOT a shit mum, lose that idea right now. These things happen SO easily. And midwives etc have to be cautious for professional reasons, so it can seem like the end of the world when one slip up really isn't that big a deal. If you're anxious about the baby, go and ask for a MW check-up, they really won't mind. But I'm sure one lemsip won't have made any difference. Feel better soon!

Please don't worry.

Many, many OTC medication are deemed 'not safe in pregnancy' because it's unethical to test them on pregnant women not because the medication is actually unsafe.

I'm on a medication that you have to be clear of for 12 months prior to TTC - there are numerous warnings and I've been vetted to make sure I'm not as risk of accidental pregnancy.... if Lemsip was very dangerous in pregnancy, it wouldn't be available OTC.

I did exactly the same and got myself into a total panic. DS was absolutely fine, try not to upset yourself
