Dog vs hedgehog

Firstly, I’m an animal lover and I want to resolve this. We have started to get hedgehogs come into our garden at night. I know they are endangered but my dog doesn’t appreciate this fact.

The dog doesn’t touch them and he can’t pick them up because he’s small but he stands close and barks which is unlike him as he’s not a vocal dog. He is a stubborn sod and absolutely will not come inside until I clip the lead on and make him come in. I’ve tried using a clicker to get him to be obedient but no joy. I bribe with his favourite foods but he just doesn’t care. I’m concerned that his barking will distress the hedgehog.

I don’t think I can deter the hedgehogs, can I? Or is there anything else I can do except put the lead on and make him come inside?

Our elderly terrier was an outdoor dog. In her last few weeks she used to go out for her night time wee and watch the big hedgehog we called harry eat her food. The day we took her to the vets for her final visit harry ate her food but left her one off treat hot dog sausages.
That night he had a sniff round where we had buried her, tipped the empty bowl in disgust, ate a hotdog sausage he had found and curled up in her dog bed in her kennel with her blanket round him.
We wondered if this had been a long standing arrangement.
