Anybody know about eyes?

So dh got something in his eye at work yesterday. I took him to the minor injuries unit and he has had it irrigated and a dye put in it to establish whether there is still something in it. Apparently not. We have antibiotic ointment for it which he has started using. But he’s in a lot of discomfort/pain. He’s has some brufen and gone to bed as it hurts so much.
Is there anything else I can do for him? Heat/ice? What do you do with eyes?

Did it graze the cornea? If so, it can be very sore until it heals (which will depend on the size of the graze).

DH wore dark glasses everywhere for 4 weeks while his healed. We listened to the radio as the tv was too bright for a while.

The doctor said there is no evidence of any damage or foreign body in it. That said, it is obviously really sore as he doesn’t fuss about injuries usually. It must really hurt for him to have reacted like dark does seem to help, I’ll suggest dark glasses tomorrow. Thanks for replying, I hope your dh is fully fixed now.

He could try a warm or cold wet flannel over his eyes, that helps when my allergies are really bad as keeps the eye nice and damp.
Warm and cold help different symptoms for me so worth trying both.

Did they prescribe some ocular lubricants too? They provide a barrier between the eyelids and the scratch.
It should be feeling better hourly, the cornea can repair is entire outer layer within three days. If it’s still feeling as bad in the morning you need to get him seen again. An optometrist /optician can check as easily as the hospital.

Don't use a wet flannel, just stick with the ointment. Suprised they didn't give drops to help though.

I've had this and it was a tiny seed that had got stuck behind my contact lens. Was absolute agony for about 12 hours then it did start to ease off. It'll heal fast. Sleep probably the best thing tbh.

Dh says thank you mumsnet hive mind.
He is feeling a little better today but it’s still v.sore. Definitely better with his eyes closed so don’t think we’ll be doing much today.

You can buy preservative free lubricants from Boots or an optician. Hycosan is good. Worth getting some for when it starts to heal and he’s finished the course of treatment. Make sure he uses some at bed time to make his eyes feel more comfortable in the morning.

TheGonnagle · 23/09/2018 20:21

Hycosan it is, I’ll pick some up tomorrow thank you.
