Anyone work in retail?

Considering picking up some weekend hours in retail. I used to work retail (then hospitality) since leaving school until not long ago, I now have an office mon-fri job.

If you work in retail, does your place have people who only work one weekend day (dont mind which!), no storecards to "push", and do you get plenty customers? I hate those shops where you wander rond refolding the same neat clothes as you only get 4 customers a day.

I want to be busy! But only one day a weekend Grin.

I’ve been out of retail quite a few years, but DP is still a retail manager and to be honest very flexible contracts are the norm now. A lot of retailers don’t have weekend only staff any more as all staff are expected to cover weekends, and most that do expect flexibility across the days - particularly in smaller shops.

Thats a shame as surely its a good thing to have someone guaranteed to work eg every single saturday.

They do have that - all the full timers! DP hasn’t had a Saturday off on years unless it’s annual leave! Staffing budgets are tight so the easiest way to cut costs is to demand flexibility. Don’t get me wrong some companies have weekend staff but it’s not as common as it once was.

I work in supermarket retail and almost all our contracts are now flexi. You have set core hours but need flexibility to work overtime if needed each week. Having said that weekends are always busy and we usually are crying out for weekend staff.

When I was in supermarket management we had staff who just did 1 weekend day as their contract. Some would only ever do those hours and some would pick up over time as and when it mutually suited. There was never any pressure to do so though.

You might be best trying a small local corner shop - we are always looking for weekend people as most of the part time staff want to work round school hours.

I worked Saturday and Sunday in a shop for a year and a half until recently.
