Tell me this is food poisoning and not a stomach bug!

I had a ready made chicken Caesar wrap from the local One Stop yesterday at around 2pm, by 10pm my stomach was making some weird sounds and feeling a bit crampy which resulted in a bout of the runs. Half an hour later I had to go again. Nothing since then but feeling nauseous on and off then hungry in-between. Had some chicken and rice for dinner and stomach is back to gurgling/popping/cramping so I expect more diarrhoea on the way. DH and kids are fine. Is this food poisoning? I've banned everyone from using the downstairs loo and bleaching it to within an inch of it's life in case of bug! I cannot be dealing with everyone getting a stomach bug so hoping it's food poisoning and will just affect me....

Sounds more like food poisoning to me.

HoleyCoMoley · 20/09/2018 21:39

Do you think it's from the wrap. If it.is.it.needs.to.he reported to health authority. That.means a poo sample.via the gp. Could it be something you've touched and got into your hands.

CakeBeTheFoodOfLove · 20/09/2018 21:45

If it was anything it would be the wrap. Pretty sure I've not touched anything else - my line of work means I'm constantly washing hands/wearing gloves so very unlikely to be transmitted by hand and I only worked yesterday 9 until 3 and this started at 10pm yesterday so too soon to be anything viral from work.

I had terrible (confirmed) food poisoning through rice. So not sure if the symptoms would be precisely the same. But...

3 adults all ate the rice at 8pm. Between 1.30 and 2am (so 5-6 hours) we were all woken with quite extreme nausea, within 30 mins we all had fairly uncontrollable vomiting (really nasty, i won’t go into graphic descriptions) which lasted for another 5-6 hours. During that time the pain was moving lower and the Diarrhoea started too. After 12 hours most of it had subsided but we all felt very washed out and unwell for 72 hours. Wasn’t nice.

I'm sure it's just food poisoning, hope it clears up soon.

Was the rice reheated alabaster? I’ve heard of people getting it from takeaway fried rice etc

DrCoconut · 20/09/2018 22:25

When I was expecting DS3 me, STBXH and DS2 had a meal at a fish and chip restaurant in town. Later that day I started with the worst D and V and stomach pain I've ever had. It lasted 48 hours and was seriously awful. The others didn't get it though.

Alabasterangel6 · 21/09/2018 07:30

tigercub50 yes, takeaway rice. It was the only dish we’d all had part of. We still had the container. GP reported it to environmental health and we gave them the container. They took it seriously as there had been other complaints about the same outlet.

It’s not reheating the rice that is the issue (they told us) it’s the initial cooling of the cooked batch. So (example) egg rice or pilau rice are fried rices. The restaurant will make a big batch of boiled rice to fry. They should then (and us if doing this at home) rapidly cool and keep cool the rice until frying. If you don’t carry out that and let the rice cool slowly at room temp (and worse in big batches where the centre cools slowly) then the bacteria develops and you get very poorly as we found out!!
