At what age did you buy your first house/property?

Just that really....

I am hoping to buy a property this year with my DP, we have found it difficult and I have been trying not to compare myself with other friends who purchased their house in their early 20's! I am very proud of what we have achieved so far and I know that it is not always an attainable or in fact desired goal for everyone.

I am 30 and my DP is 25

I guess this is just a nosey thread, please do not answer if you do not feel comfortable doing so!

8 years ago, when I was 27. Bought with DP. 85% mortgage, house was 100k when we bought it and now approx 130k.

I was 22 and now DH was 23 when we purchased our first home. A terraced property in a relatively cheap area of the country back in 2009.

horseladeee · 19/09/2018 23:40

28 two years ago. Although it's not the house we want to stayed in forever. Hoping to upsize in about five years. Did it this way as didn't want to commit to massive mortgage.

    1. Tough but the best thing I ever did. Mortgage was £245, utilities and service charge about £120. I earnt £447.

  1. I think I bought the last affordable flat in London.
deliciouscheesecake · 20/09/2018 02:06

19, it was the 1980's and our repayment was 3/4 of our monthly income. Anyone could get a mortgage back then, they didn't ask many questions.

We ate very little...

anxious62 · 20/09/2018 02:36

19 in 1990. Was hard at the time. Never went out.

bitheby · 20/09/2018 02:55
  1. In London.
TowerRingInferno · 20/09/2018 06:18

29, 2001, SE commuter belt
Only mamaged it because of an unexpected inheritance (death of a parent).

pinkmagic1 · 20/09/2018 06:32

I was 20. It was in 1999 and it was a 2 bedroom terrace for 25k. I had an 100 percent mortgage.
It was the best financial decision I ever made as there is no way I would be able to get on the ladder now, even with mine and dh's wages combined.

ImogenTubbs · 20/09/2018 06:39

I was 27. It was £210k for a one bed flat in south London. I only managed it with help from family for which I'm eternally grateful.

Verbena87 · 20/09/2018 06:45

With my partner. We were 29 & 33 and were very lucky to inherit some money which helped with our deposit.

candlefloozy · 20/09/2018 06:48

31

candlefloozy · 20/09/2018 06:50

31 with husband. This was less than a year ago

RiddleyW · 20/09/2018 06:50

26 in London on a x 10 multiple of my salary and 100% mortgage. This was in 2006.

RiddleyW · 20/09/2018 06:52

So I earned 20k and got a mortgage of 200k. I paid interest only and it was a tracker rate so when I took it out it was about £900 a month and then dropped over the next few years until for a while we were paying 200 odd. Weird times.

India1819 · 20/09/2018 07:00

I was 23 and my then bf was 26. 3 bed detached new build with garage that cost £140k. Saved since my first wage packet after graduating and my bf was a good saver too.

But we live in the midlands and property is very reasonable. We also benefitted from the back end of the recession and lower house prices.

onestitchaway · 20/09/2018 07:00

19, with ex H, 18years ago 100% mortgage.

It’s so different now

timeforachangeithink · 20/09/2018 07:03

22, 2001

shallen · 20/09/2018 07:15

28 in 2010 a 2 bed flat with a 90%mortgage.

Ginorchoc · 20/09/2018 07:49

1998, age 22 £34k flat in SW16 with a 100% mortgage, solo, no help from parents and no social media begging for furniture, had a blow up mattress for months until I could afford my first item, a sofa bed. Taxi driver who dropped me off with my dog and 3 black bags of items and a TV came back with a pizza and a coke for me as I reminded him of his daughter starting out. It was the kindest thing anyone had ever done for me! Poor man would probably be reported to 101 now though.

It was a struggle but much harder now with wage/house price ratio for starting out with no help so I’ll be trying to help my daughter if I can when needed.

KanielOutis · 20/09/2018 07:58
  1. 2008 with a 100% mortgage. Still here. It has doubled in value but so has everything else and I can't afford to move.
Ginmakesitallok · 20/09/2018 08:01

21, one bed flat for 21k with 100% mortgage which was around £123 a month

Lollypop27 · 20/09/2018 08:03

2001 It was a few days after my 19th birthday. £66k house. Dh and I both worked full time and saved all we could. £7k deposit. No help from parents. Everything was 2nd hand or had come from our bedrooms at home. My parents got us a new kettle and my in laws got us some tea towels and some plant pots.

CormoranStrike · 20/09/2018 08:04

I was 22 - days of 100% mortgages. Chose not to overextend, so laid £42k for a two bedroom mid terrace and lived there for about four years.

Moved - but kept same mortgage term - so was fully mortgage paid off by about 47.
