At what age did you buy your first house/property?

Just that really....

I am hoping to buy a property this year with my DP, we have found it difficult and I have been trying not to compare myself with other friends who purchased their house in their early 20's! I am very proud of what we have achieved so far and I know that it is not always an attainable or in fact desired goal for everyone.

I am 30 and my DP is 25

I guess this is just a nosey thread, please do not answer if you do not feel comfortable doing so!

24, in 1997. House cost £55k. Bought alone

Tigerbear · 19/09/2018 18:56

Age 27 with my boyfriend.
Flat was £250k in very Central London, WC1. We were very lucky - had about £15k help on the deposit from my mum.

27, almost 2 years ago but we couldn’t have if we weren’t given some money from a very generous family friend. We now own two houses but the second one was bought by us but with my parents money as they couldn’t get a mortgage. If we had to save up it would have taken much longer. We’ee Also in the north east so house prices are lower

Zioanna · 19/09/2018 18:57

32 with a partner, just a few years ago. Could have bought a lot sooner but we preferred not to and don’t regret it. Things are a lot different in the north east!

Only able to jointly with DH. Both 23 and in 2013 for a 3bed in the home counties.

Rockbird · 19/09/2018 19:00

In 1999 when I was 27, two bed flat in Surrey cost £98k

BrickByBrick · 19/09/2018 19:00

23, Dh was 34. House doubled in value in the 16yrs we were there.

Seniorschoolmum · 19/09/2018 19:00

21 in 2007 with DP, 2 bed flat £125k 5% deposit South East

MadisonAvenue · 19/09/2018 19:01

It was 1991, we're in the Midlands and we bought a new build flat for £34000 which seemed like a hell of a lot, especially as my husband's sister had bought a Victorian semi for £8000 just a couple of years before.

DollyWilde · 19/09/2018 19:02

27, with my now husband, who was 29. His dad had passed away and left him £20k which we put towards the deposit, otherwise we’d have never have managed it despite having good jobs (in London, albeit a scruffy south east corner).

DollyWilde · 19/09/2018 19:02

(That was 2 years ago)

juneybean · 19/09/2018 19:03

blueviolets · 19/09/2018 19:05
  1. Could have bought maybe from 23 and rather annoyed I didn’t. Missed out on some loverly properties but was too scared to part with my savings until completely sure I could afford to buy.
SkippedALightFandango · 19/09/2018 19:05

I was 22. It was a one bed flat in southsea in Hampshire. It was £26,000 and same flat now would be in the region of £120,000

blueviolets · 19/09/2018 19:05

Oh was in 2011

foxyknoxy30 · 19/09/2018 19:06

25 in 1999 bought for £42500 worked for a bank got 100% LTV and fixed at 2.5% for the entire length of mortgage sold in 2005 for £85000

blueviolets · 19/09/2018 19:06

Oh and don’t compare to others, it was a very boring tedious journey to save a house deposit. I find owning a house much nicer than renting though

DinosApple · 19/09/2018 19:12

21 with my bf in 2003
Split up two years later and had to sell. Hmm

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 19/09/2018 19:12

I was 24 (2009). It was £153.5k and I bought with my ex. When we split I bought a house for £120k in 2012. I had made money on the first property to give me a decent ish deposit for one on my own, otherwise it would have been impossible. Owning a property alone was hard.

deptfordgirl · 19/09/2018 19:14

I was 30 and dp was 29. I was earning well but never could have bought anywhere without dp's savings which were from inheritance. I have never had inheritance or help from family and I really think it's impossible to buy in your early 20s without.

TheActualLastJedi · 19/09/2018 19:14

Me 26 DP 24 (2016) bought a £97k 3 bed terrace house with a £10k deposit we also have a child. It was a tough slog to save as our joint income is only £46k and we had hefty childcare costs but we did it.
