At what age did you buy your first house/property?

Just that really....

I am hoping to buy a property this year with my DP, we have found it difficult and I have been trying not to compare myself with other friends who purchased their house in their early 20's! I am very proud of what we have achieved so far and I know that it is not always an attainable or in fact desired goal for everyone.

I am 30 and my DP is 25

I guess this is just a nosey thread, please do not answer if you do not feel comfortable doing so!

Sakura7 · 19/09/2018 20:42

34 now and still haven't managed it despite saving for years. It's quite worrying actually.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 19/09/2018 20:47

I was 19 but it was 30 years ago so only needed 2.5x joint salary and 10% deposit. Wouldn’t be able borrow enough to buy it at current market value though! It’s worth seven times what we bought it for.

17 years ago age 28 with an ex - 1 bed flat in up and coming part of SE London for £113k, split up 2 years later making £60k on the sale of that, lost all my share on the subsequent duff purchase I made alone after that Shock

DancingForTheDog · 19/09/2018 20:50

22, bought a Victorian terrace in 1986 with my partner for £27K. Sold it in 1989 for 98K! The Zoopla estimate for that house now is £390K.

butlerswharf · 19/09/2018 20:51

30 -Central London. The best financial decision I've made in my life so far as it's value has almost tripled. I feel very lucky.

itbemay · 19/09/2018 20:52

21 I'm now 43 and on 2nd house. I bought when a 2 bed house in a London postcode was £75 and sold it 2 years later for £175 so was v lucky. It's so hard for anyone wanting to buy now.

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 19/09/2018 20:53

We were 25 and 24 in 1994, bought a 65k house with a 5k deposit and about 15k renovations (repossession). We earned about 30k combined. Sold 9 years later for 185k. I feel very sorry for younger people these days where house prices are out of their range even if you earn a decent salary.

2gorgeousboys · 19/09/2018 20:54

Just after my 22nd birthday, DP was 28. Like PP it was in the days of 100% mortgages.

Lynne1Cat · 19/09/2018 20:54

I was 25, my husband 26, when we took on our 1st mortgage. We had 2 boys, then aged 3 and 1, and only my husband's low wage coming in.

Mummyshark2018 · 19/09/2018 20:56

25 with partner (now DH) in 2006 for £246k . My first house and his 3rd. Expensive southeast uni town. Prob couldn't afford to buy it now as wages haven't increased in line with property prices, although we have had promotions etc. Now worth about £425k

Whatifigglepiggleandpeppadated · 19/09/2018 20:56

20 with dh who was 22 that was in 2012

MrsPworkingmummy · 19/09/2018 20:57

The month I turned 18 in 2004.£79950 for an absolute dive of a house with a 100% mortgage. Anything to get away from my mother.

diodon · 19/09/2018 20:58

foxycleopauper · 19/09/2018 20:59
  1. DH (DP at the time) had just turned 22.
formerbabe · 19/09/2018 21:01

Everyone on here bought so young! It must have been a long time ago and/or not anywhere near London!

Snog · 19/09/2018 21:07

28, on my own, 1 bed flat in 1996.
Flat cost £50k, I earned £25k. Flat now worth £300k.

Josiebloggs · 19/09/2018 21:26

32
5 years ago, on my own, in the South East. My home has almost doubled in value since then and I could not afford it now.
I was far too stupid in my 20s to get a mortgage Grin

myhousetoday · 19/09/2018 21:28

I was 26, in 1996
My one and only house, together with DP, now DH, we still live here.

Numbkinnuts · 19/09/2018 21:33

22yrs. In late 1980s

SammySays · 19/09/2018 21:40

I was 22 and DH was 24 (8years ago). Couldn’t afford to buy outright as we lived in London but bought a 2 bedroom new build through shared ownership. We sold that flat last year and moved to the country where we have a lovely little 3 bedroom house which is all ours Smile

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 19/09/2018 21:50
  1. On my own. Two bed semi with a lovely garden for £165k. In around 2002.

Should/could've bought sooner, but had a nasty relationship breakdown and blew my deposit travelling. (Which was awesome and worth every penny!)

Luckily my now DH had been sensible and bought two properties in the 90s before we met, which we have paid off between us, helped by us living in rent subsidised housing for years because of his work. We then bought a BTL together and sold my little house to buy a family home together when he moved job. He inherited a half share in yet another, which we sold.

MagentaRocks · 19/09/2018 21:52

I was 22, bought on my own. I bought a one bed end terrace for 36.5k. Sold it 8 years ago for 102.5k. I saved like mad to buy it and spent about a year buying things in advance like cleaner, toilet rolls and all sorts of household stuff so it would be easier when I did buy.

Evianliveyoung1 · 19/09/2018 21:54

22, 7 months before I got married. This was only 2 and a half years ago. In a very lucky position money wise
