WWYD - Work Related query

In the past, in work, the phone systems were updated. I was asked by my manager to record the messages on the help desk call management system. So if someone has an issue it is my voice that they hear saying "Hello, you've reached XYZ help desk. Please select one of the following options" etc. I got no additional money for doing this.

I had put this tiny bit of information that I was the voice of the help desk on my profile (which can be searched in work).

This one sentence on my profile has been up there for months.

My manager has just come in and asked me to remove it from my profile. I've done that reluctantly .

The question I have is would you do any further recordings for them if they ask in the future?

you put this info on a work profile or SM? What benefit is it to you to tell all that you have done this? just trying to figure out why boss would want you to remove it...

It's a work profile, only visible to people who I work with. Not available in any capacity to someone who is not logged on to our internal network.

My boss was very softly spoken unusual when I was asked to remove the sentence from my profile, which I did while they were at my desk.

My question is though, as I was asked to do recordings in the past, whether I would be unreasonable not to do them in the future (based on being asked to remove the piece from my profile?

What was her reason for asking you to remove it?

WhatchaMaCalllit · 19/09/2018 17:44

Because someone might think that I'm the actual help desk and phone me instead of the very widely publicized actual help desk! I kid you not.

It normally costs around £150 + VAT for a 1 hour voice recording session, with a selection of artists and styles to choose from. I know this as I have run several call centres and had to authorise budget payments for these sessions every time we had a change. You can normally get 4-6 separate announcements recorded in 1 hour.

You've saved them money, without asking for additional payment. Many companies do this. I have been 'The Voice' for several of my call centres.

If you cannot have recognition, or even an explanation as to why you cannot have recognition, then you are perfectly reasonable to say no. Just be ready with how you will say it, in case you're put on the spot.

Wankers Hmm

legocardsagain · 19/09/2018 17:55

Sorry, just seen the piss poor reason for why you had to remove it. Re-phrase the sentence or write it in a way they are happy with. It's really petty.

WipsGlitter · 19/09/2018 17:56

Could you reword it?

Claim to fame - when you call the help desk it's my lovely voice you hear giving instructions, remember helpdesk number is 1234

Or something like that.

Why did you want to include it on your profile?

WhatchaMaCalllit · 19/09/2018 18:00

There is a section in the profile that lists your Bio and there is another section that you select your Skills from a list of options in a drop down menu. I put it into my Bio as it's something I was proud of doing and if other people throughout the company were looking for someone to do a recording (and I've been asked to do two other recordings as a result of the 'help desk' voice overs), they know who to ask for.

I think I'll go on the hunt to see what other people have put into their Bio's and if there are any other unusual items, I'll request that I be allowed put up some form of publicity in my own.

That said, I still want to know if based on this, if it were you, whether you would do future recordings for them?

I suppose it depends on the actual wording if I read that you were "the voice of the helpdesk" I would think you worked on the helpdesk, it would never occur to me that you meant you were the person who'd recorded the message.

Is that what they are worried about maybe?

WipsGlitter · 19/09/2018 20:30

Yes I would do them in the future. As you say word has already got round that you're confident enough to do it.

Thanks guys. You've helped me sort this out in my head. Really appreciate it!

Cheers!
