Those with a smart meter - love it or hate it?!

Exciting thread alert.....

Have an appointment for a smart meter to be installed but not really sure if I want / need one.

Will I become obsessed with how much the family are spending and drive everyone daft?!

Thoughts please....

Haven't got one and don't want one until you can change suppliers with them otherwise it's just pointless.
Someone comes out to read the meter and I'm on prepayment so I know how much I'm paying anyway.
Had a knock on the door from one company apparently I'm only one of 3 left on my street without one.

We're having one put in next week.DH is beyond excited as it means he can now control electricity usage like he does water.

The electricity police are moving in alongside the water police, oh the joys to come👅. Honestly he's mainly lovely but a bit of a control freak

Mine is useful as a clock and a thermostat. Don't really check much else on it

I go to my hairdressers home to get my hair done and remember seeing hers go to red when the hairdryer was on.... Confused I just don’t think I need that in my life! We also switch suppliers fairly frequently so I think I’ll cancel the appointment.

Can’t help wondering just what is the reason why the government seem so desperate for us all to have one of these not-so-smart-meters.

On the one hand, they put measures in place to control energy prices, but now we’re all being bribed to have one of these meters installed and those that don’t want one end up stuck on the most expensive tarif.

Ours stopped working when DH arsed about with broadband. I assume the gasboard are still getting our data but ur smart meter is stuck in the cupboard behind the cat food.

I like it because it means no more estimated bills and having to try to read a meter hidden in a spider-infested bin cupboard. The stupid gadget was handy until it broke and decided my use was £75 a month (I'm single, in a one-bed flat - it barely creeps over £30 until I need to use the heating). Luckily the meter readings have still been fine, it was just the gadget being silly, so I've just turned it off and ignore it.

It also means when I get dodgy people around claiming to need to read my meter (all the meters around here are outside so not the best scam) I have an easier way to get rid of them.

Ours was a novelty for 2 days then I put the display thing in the drawer because I don't like clutter.

I've switched supplier now so it's useless anyway.

The best way to save money is regularly switch supplier, I've just moved to Avro from Scottish Power saving £80 a month.

vandrew4 · 19/09/2018 18:01

do people really need a meter display to tell them they should switch stuff off if they're not using it? Confused

Waddsup12 · 19/09/2018 18:05

Pointless, changed supplier, stopped working, causing me issues. Changed back to installing supplier, still dumb...

If I'd known, I'd not have changed it yet.

van I think they must. When we had ours installed the engineer was showing me how to use the energy monitor and our house was 'running' on a couple of pence an hour (during the day, no heating on etc)which was most likely the TV and sky box on stand by. The engineer said that was really low and most houses he goes to run at more even when people think and say everything is off.

the reason is that we dont have enough energy generation capacity - years of under investment and art student policies, partly but not entirely due to the eu.

Smart meters are to allow variable pricing and switching off. give it 15-20 years.
