Samsung galaxy clueless user

Help me ! New work phone is a Samsung galaxy. Am clueless though mostly managing ok. Used nothing but Iphone for years and years!

I keep getting stuck where my email and message apps think I want to select a message to delete / flag or whatever ... how on earth do you get back to normal view ??
Am on a train and can't view
Or send any
Messages ..

Bottom left let's you shut down apps. Comes in handy!
