My Samsung phone always running out of storage

A580Hojas · 19/09/2018 07:06

Can anyone help me clear some space on my bloody phone? I don't understand what I've got on here that takes up so much storage. I haven't got any music, games, or video. Hardly any apps. What else is clogging it up? I'very got to download a simple app to use for work and the lack of storage is preventing this and I need to do it this morning! Help?!

Have you got an SD card?

Internal storage won't be brilliant in most phones. If you but a SD card you can change setting to store apps, photos and the such like on that.

jjemimapuddleduck · 19/09/2018 07:10

What kind of Samsung phone is it? My son had a J3 and it was awful, all the apps that came with the phone and couldnt be uninstalled took up about 90% of thr syorage, whereas my S7 has great storage.

Have you been into Settings and deleted the cache etc listen to me trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about...!

ifoundthebread · 19/09/2018 07:12

I find my photos take up alot of storage. Phones are built with better quality cameras so the pictures take up more storage

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 19/09/2018 07:15

Move absolutely everything you can to SD card.
I have a j3 and it comes with so much pre installed bloatware that there's bugger all room for much else

RebelRogue · 19/09/2018 07:19

First look into settings and see how much space you have to begin with(the bigger the storage the more expensive the phone is) and what's using most of it.
Add an SD card and store most things there.

Elephantinacravat · 19/09/2018 07:22

How many GB is it?

SilverHairedCat · 19/09/2018 07:49

What model is the phone? Do you have an SD card option? Can your screenshot the current storage use for us? Do you run any cleaners on it? Is it loaded with photos and videos?

EvaHarknessRose · 19/09/2018 07:53

My dd has an SD card and has the same problem.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/09/2018 07:54

You can delete updates for the apps that came with the phone

SilverHairedCat · 19/09/2018 08:02

@EvaHarknessRose has she moved her apps to the SD card? Especially Spotify - that one is a sod for jumping back into the internal memory. Known problem, requires erasing the app and music and reinstalling direct onto the SD card.

smurfy2015 · 19/09/2018 08:09

same problem here too, so much so that I use a separate phone for taking pics and accessing the wifi but have no sim in it

I have a J5

A580Hojas · 19/09/2018 08:10

How do I do a screen shot?

Total Space: 8GB
Available Space: 444MB
System Memory: 3.36GB
Used Space: 4.1GB
Cached data: 11.72MB
Misc files: 103MB

I don't know if I have an SD card! Sad

Mine is the same - I have to keep deleting apps to fit other stuff on.
Apparently is because samsung have huge amounts of inbuilt stuff on the phone before you get it, but you can't delete any of it. I would never get an iPhone but I am jealous of their storage!,

SilverHairedCat · 19/09/2018 08:12

@A580Hojas what's the phone model?

A580Hojas · 19/09/2018 08:15

I think its a J3 (am technophobe can you tell?)

SilverHairedCat · 19/09/2018 08:18

OK, go to:
Settings
About phone (or about device)
Model number

And post the model number here! Smile

Trishtashtosh · 19/09/2018 08:18

I've got an SD card (I bought one-OP their not standard). Bloody irritating as most apps won't allow you to move them to the SD card so you're stuck with them. You can store photos on then which is good (slightly convoluted process to do so though). I regularly (3 or 4 times a week) have to go into settings to delete cache/data. Once I've done this I also find restarting the phone useful too.
Also got a Samsung. Not sure I would get one again.

A580Hojas · 19/09/2018 08:22

Device name: Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016)
Model number: SM-J320FN

OK so good news, you can put a standard micro SD card into that phone, up to 128GB (you probably don't need to go anywhere near that big).

Bad news, it's rh same phone as my mum and as per a PP, it's a sod for not letting you switch many apps over to the card.

Get a small card, 16gb is plenty for lots of things really, and it will have a slot in the side for it to go in.

Delete any apps you're not using and if it won't let you delete them then take them back to factory settings:

Settings
Applications Manager
All
Sort by size

Then delete or reset any you don't use.

You can also clear the cache on all the apps this way too.

I have a samsung withh an sd card. It regularly telles me it has no space, even though all photos and any apps that I can move are saved to the card not the phone. It turns out that everytime an app updates - it moves it from the sd card and back to the internal memory.

So now, I have disabled automatic updates. I update manually, then I go to my apps list and move any that I can back to the sd card. It has made a world of difference! I no longer get the not enough space message total pain in the arse though

After I have done an app update and moved the apps, I then go to settings > device maintenance and check the storage capacity.

A580Hojas · 19/09/2018 08:52

Thanks for all this incredibly helpful advice - am so grateful!

In a rush to get to work now.

One thing I do know - it won't be a crappy Samsung Galaxy for me next time I update.

Cheers for the help Brew Cake Flowers

It's not that it's a Samsung. It's that you have 8gb of storage. I had a J3 with the exact same problem. An sd card sadly didn't resolve it either as it would still try to store things on the device. Even the ee shop could not resolve it.

I now have another Samsung but different model and nor storage and it is great Smile

Elephantinacravat · 19/09/2018 09:17

So it's 8GB? I have been there with a Motorola, good phone but by the time android was installed I literally had no room for anything else. I couldn't get the SD card to carry anything but a few photos either. My husband had said 8gb wouldn't be enough but I didn't listen to him, as the reviews were good. In the end, after having to delete my final app of the BBC News, I admitted defeat and got a new phone!
