Costco question

I’m am catering for a picnic for about a dozen people on Saturday. I keep being told that Costco is the best place to get things like sandwich platters. I’ve just discovered that I am eligible for membership through my work.
For anyone who shops at Costco, do you know if I can just turn up, sign up for membership and buy sandwich platters off the shelf (out of fridge) or do I have to order them in advance like I would Sainsbury’s? I have a feeling that I might have left this whole arrangement a bit too late!

They normally have them in the fridge.

MissConductUS · 18/09/2018 23:17

They won't have platters of sandwiches lying about. Most of them would wind up getting binned.

It's not too late. If you join tomorrow that's plenty of time to have them made up.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 18/09/2018 23:17

They have them in the fridge, and yes you can sign up and start buying the same day.

Yes to caveat they prob won’t have many platters ready.

MissConductUS · 18/09/2018 23:18

Bodear, good to know. That's not the practice for my Costco in the US.

OP, you might want to call ahead to confirm.

www.costco.co.uk

You should find more information on the website, I think it should be ok but ring ahead and check. See if you can sort your membership and place the order online.

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2018 23:21

Our nearest Costco do have sandwich and wrap platters in the fridge section but you can pre order them too. I'd check the opening times though. Generally they let trade cardholders in earlier than general cardholders so you may not be able to collect on the day in time for the picnic - unless they will let you in early to collect a pre order.

DerelictWreck · 18/09/2018 23:22

The Manchester one always has the made up in the fridges along with big lasagnes and pasta salads etc for catering

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2018 23:25

Actually, I've just checked - you should be ok on Saturday. It's week days that trade cardholders can go in earlier.

Rockbird · 18/09/2018 23:25

Croydon one has loads of sandwiches and wraps made up too.

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2018 23:26

I want to take a trip to costco now Grin. I love it there!

lurker101 · 18/09/2018 23:26

You can get them there and then, but some of their sandwich platters are pre-order only (tend to work out a bit cheaper and more variety). I think it’s 24hr notice

bellsbuss · 18/09/2018 23:30

Once you've joined you can use your card the same day , if you go in the morning there will be plenty of platters left

DrWhy · 19/09/2018 07:28

Thanks folks. I’ll see if there’s a phone number for my physical branch to ask them, it seems to go to a central number.
I can’t easily sign up ahead of time and then order online as I think I physically have to show a payslip to prove eligibility for membership. I have commitments every evening this week now so getting there before Saturday morning will be a struggle.
My alternative I think is just to order from Tesco online! But people have me so intrigued by Costco!

We've ordered ours from Morrison's as they are cheaper.

SoyDora · 19/09/2018 07:30

We got them on the day in store when we bought loads for a birthday party.

indianwoman · 19/09/2018 07:33

Can anyone join? What are the rules?

PiperPublickOccurrences · 19/09/2018 07:40

Membership isn't open to anyone - set list of occupations.

www.costco.co.uk/membership-individual-requirements

Also some companies offer membership as a perk to staff.

SoyDora · 19/09/2018 07:41

The list of occupations is pretty wide though.

UrsulaPandress · 19/09/2018 07:44

Costco is akin to the 7th circle of hell.

Really not worth it imo.

SoyDora · 19/09/2018 07:51

We love Costco.

JellySlice · 19/09/2018 08:14

Even if there are no sandwich platters, you will still come away from Costco with a marvellous picnic Grin

(Plus a lot more! Shopping at Costco requires self-discipline Wink)

Bodear · 19/09/2018 08:18

Where else can you buy diamonds and climbing frames?! Amazing place.

elaine26 · 19/09/2018 08:23

Their cherry tomatoes on the vine are really sweet and delicious so would be good for your picnic too

greendale17 · 19/09/2018 08:30

We've ordered ours from Morrison's as they are cheaper.

^But they don’t taste as nice as Costco ones. Sometimes it’s not always about price.
