Tax credits overpayment

Namechangingagainjustbecause · 17/09/2018 14:35

I received a tax credits renewal letter around three weeks ago, they have assessed that over the past year we have been overpayed but there is no information on the letter about how to repay. So I have been waiting for a further letter/invoice with payment instructions but haven’t received one. Do they send this or is it up to me to call them to arrange payment? Tia

In my experience they sometimes send two or three letters, saying you've overpaid/underpaid /had the right amount... Once they've settled on it they arrange to take it out of your next year's claim, or if you aren't claiming anymore at some point they'll send you a request for money - I wouldn't expect to have to pay it back any time soon but if you can keep the money aside that'll cover all bases.

Just wait, they'll come back with another letter soon enough.

I had three in a row a few years back. One like yours. One saying here's a cheque for £1100 for underpayment. The third saying you owe £1200 for underpayment in the previous year.

They're not very bright, you know.

Wait a couple of weeks and they will send another letter. To help me understand the overpayment I asked them to tell me how much we earned, how much they paid and how much they should have paid for each tax year. I then wrote it all down and then checked later. They did have it correct but they don’t always. I’m paying back via child benefit. CB goes in one day and then goes out the next to TC. No treats until next Christmas. They were quite nice tbh and said I could have longer and to just let them know if I need to reduce the amount before i miss it.

I called them for the same reason and they couldn't tell me when it would arrive but they are srandard issue within 30 days of your renewal date.
Got mine on Saturday dated 7th Sept, so quite quick for them. Original letter was more than a month before!
