Weight limit for hand luggage (8kg) - do they actually weight it?

Just that really - is hand luggage actually weighs, whether at checkin or at the gate?

Air Portugal, if it makes any difference.

Thanks!

Often weighed at check in. If they see you obviously struggling with it as you get to the gate, they might weigh it again.

Jozen · 17/09/2018 08:06

Yes I've had my hand luggage weighed.

Fluffyears · 17/09/2018 09:31

Had mine weighed by Thomas Cook and was a bit out out as Jet2holidays just seem to be of theopinion if you can carry it....also annoyed by the crappy 15 kg! 22kg is more sensible.

I know Thomas cook weigh it, and are very strict about it.

Kitkat2018 · 17/09/2018 10:35

Just flew virgin Atlantic and going and coming home they didn't weigh it. Really surprised me.

SpoonBlender · 17/09/2018 10:46

Cheap/package holiday airlines often do, expensive airlines generally don't. Unless you're clearly leaning waaaay over to balance a heavy bag on your shoulder!

This is largely because cheap airlines charge extra for hold baggage so people try to squeeze 15kg into a shoulder bag.

I have been away with two different airlines within the past year with an 8 kg limit and neither weighed mine at either end. You could see it would fit in the cage though and they were stopping some. This was Blue Air and Aegaen.

I've had hand luggage weighed by Virgin and Ryanair before. Ryanair were the strictest I've ever known anywhere particularly in Spain. Anyway I always stick within limits now.

22kg for hand luggage Fluffy??! What are you packing Grin

TheFluffyHippo · 17/09/2018 17:03

I travel a lot with loads of different airlines and I’ve never had it weighed. I usually travel hand luggage only and check in online so I completely bypass the desk and go straight to the gate. Do they have scales at the gate? I’ve never noticed any, but then I haven’t been looking.

FauxGold · 17/09/2018 17:12

I work in an airport. Can't speak for air Portugal or what other CI Agents may do, but we generally do check hand luggage. Infact we get times wgen we are told to really clamp down on oversized/too heavy bags. Whether it be in a guage for size or on the scales for weight (in accordance to specific airline stipulations) we generally do check.
Also be aware that we do double check at the gate. Alot of people have a handbag and a piece of hand luggage and if the airline says 1 piece if hand luggage only we ask for the smaller bag to go inside the big bag before weighing it - sometimes at the gate, although this depends on how busy the flight is (need to be stricter on full flights as less space in cabin but have more time to thoroughly check bags on quieter flights so catch 22).
Hope this helps.

Aegean air weigh hand luggage. Flew with them 2 weeks ago.

Aridane · 17/09/2018 22:08

Gosh, thanks.

I will be entitled to 1 bag of 8kg plus a small personal bag up to 2 kg (40x30x15 cm). So maximum of 10kg in total.

I will work on the basis that I may be weighed.

I've never actually had my hand luggage case weighed on ryan air but i have tui and Thomas cook

adaline · 18/09/2018 07:52

I've had mine weighed before - and some airlines measure as well. I've seen people at check-in being made to shift stuff out of their hand luggage into their hold luggage because their hand luggage was too heavy.

fussychica · 18/09/2018 08:42

Never had mine weighed but measured.

Aridane · 19/09/2018 20:45

Maybe only the ‘tighter’ airlines weigh as a revenue making measure (Thomas Cook) or when the flight is full?

Luggage not weighed on way there or back!

BA coming back and Air Maroc going out (Air Portugal cnoutgoing flight).

Was slightly overweight going out

I thought that bit you put it on when you check baggage in had a scale

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 25/10/2018 07:44

I can't recall ever having my hand luggage weighed. Surely not time to weigh all hand luggage at the gate? (I usually fly Easyjet, Jet2 or Ryanair)

I would guess it is far more likely it will be weighed if it looks very large or you are obviously struggling to manoeuvre or lift it

SushiMonster · 25/10/2018 07:47

I’ve never had my hand luggage weighed even on LCCs although on LCCs they often make you put it in the size cage to check it’s jot too large.
