How do you use a notebook?! A proper paper one.....

I've got about 10 gorgeous notebooks.im self employed, have 3 kids and am on two committees so have plenty reason to use them but....
If you use one to make notes- what do you do with the page when what you have written on it becomes obsolete? Draw a line through it? Rip it out?
Confused
I can see the logic in shorthand notebooks and rolling out the pages but not in a proper bound one with a spine.
Hence I have about a million notes a over the house and office because I'm too concerned about ruining my beautiful notebooks I just don't use them in the first place. But I really want to Sad

You’re like me!!

I have a gazillion notebooks all over the house. All cheaply ones with scribbles for all sorts in them. I periodically go through them and rip out what it’s obsolete. But my nice dearer notebooks in too afraid to use. So they just sit looking pretty on my desk.

Junglefowl · 16/09/2018 23:11

I totally agree, I don’t dare use them either and yet they’re such an ‘in’ thing to give people! Dd did find some ou tube videos with good art ideas for doodles etc to get you started and take the brave first step?!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 16/09/2018 23:11

I just leave the pages use the book until it’s full then start another notebook. I love a notebook so often get bought lovely ones and I love using them.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 16/09/2018 23:12

Or do bullet journaling that’s fun too although I’m so not artistic in the slightest.

WeeM · 16/09/2018 23:14

What do you use them for? I have a lovely one but it’s too nice to use but also too nice to not use!! I have been pondering this for some time...!

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 16/09/2018 23:15

Oh I bought a bullet journal. Can’t use it. Too afraid to mess it up. It’s got squares in it so would be good for maths homework Grin

GodolphianArabian · 16/09/2018 23:20

I use a notebook and I would be lost without it. Once a page has served it's function I put a squiggly line through it. I'm usually operating day to day on 2 or 3 pages. But I can still flick back to find out information I've noted to refer to.

Everything is in that notebook, to do lists, notes from meetings, meal plans, shopping lists, etc

Just stop worrying about how it looks and get stuck in!

dahliaaa · 16/09/2018 23:21

It is THE LAW that if you have a nice notebook then you have to use a nice pen. It doesn’t have to be expensive - just something from paper chase.

IloveJudgeJudy · 17/09/2018 08:56

I was like you. I had all these beautiful notebooks and was worried about starting to use them, but I realised I had bought them/been given them for a purpose. When I did start using them I had a wonderful feeling of satisfaction and almost contentment from looking at their beauty and enjoying the feel of my pen on the good quality paper.

smurfy2015 · 17/09/2018 09:19

I know the feeling of not wanting to "ruin it" - to get over the fear, recommend treating yourself to something like Wreck this Journal to get used to breaking the newness of the page and making a mark

sashh · 17/09/2018 09:33

Get a rocket book

getrocketbook.co.uk/

Actually get the pen that comes with the rocketbook ie a pilot frixion.

You use the pen and notebook to make notes and when done you can erase them with a microwave of a cup of tea. If you only want to erase one page - ues a hair dryer.

ClockworkNightingale · 17/09/2018 09:44

I number the pages as I use them, and put an index at the front listing what's on each page (nicked from Bullet Journaling). It feels like I've imposed a little bit of order on the chaos. But then I do love an index.

Namelesswonder · 17/09/2018 09:56

I write everything in my note book - meal planning, todo list, reminders, things I want to remember, present lists, books I have read / want to read......I start a new double page every week. I don’t rip pages out or score through them. I keep them and they serve as a reminder of what I was doing this time 2 years ago. I like Happy Jackson books.

TitzillatheHun · 17/09/2018 10:05

Following this with interest, as last week I added 'notebook with sections' to a shopping list. Having bought one, I can't remember what I wanted to write in it... so I'm hoping someone might jog my memory Blush

SleepingStandingUp · 17/09/2018 10:08

Oh I adore notebooks. I need to use them so I cn buy more

BeachyUmbrella · 17/09/2018 10:18

Front of the notebook is lists, with dates at the top. When about 2/3rds of the list is done, start next page and transfer undone things into it....
At the back I have 'ongoing' things, so job ideas, party guest lists, Christmas present ideas etc.
I never rip a page out, unless it's got bank account details of a transfer I have to make.

starfishmummy · 17/09/2018 10:19

I have an "everything book" that's small enough to carry in my bag. Something nice from the supermarket.

Then there are ones for specific things. They may be bog standard notebooks or something leatherbound for special things....

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/09/2018 10:20

I always have a notebook on the go. At the moment it's got plans for the holiday we're going on in 3 weeks (and the notebook will be coming with us, it's essential!), the DIY work we're doing, a general to-do lists, a page of calculations about my pay if I was worksharing, and a page of christmas decorating plans.

I cross out pages if they're to-do lists and everything's done, but other than that I just leave them.

I love looking back through old ones and seeing what we were up to.

I don't do bullet-journalling, as such; it's not that structured, and it's all scribbly and ugly. But the organisation is there. I'm inclined towards flakiness generally so it makes me feel more in control, which is nice : )

LittleBookofCalm · 17/09/2018 10:24

I dont throw out any pages, just keep them

MissTeriName · 17/09/2018 10:32

I am the notebook queen 😄 (got to put a positive spin on the hoarding somehow!) I am very particular, or peculiar, about them 🙄

At any one time I have a minimum of 4 notebooks on the go. I have short term memory issues so they’re vital. Two top-spiral reporters notebooks - one for personal/family notes and to-do lists, and one for business. More fancy notebooks for learning notes and in depth business info. My handwriting is neater in these. Notebooks with sections - each section relating to a different part of my business. Bestest handwriting 😄
Sometimes I copy notes from one of the above to yet another book. As I tend to use spiral bound I just rip pages out once they’re done with.
I may have issues. But I love stationery.

BlackStoneCherie · 17/09/2018 10:40

I'm an artist and use quite large note books and when I use them I write the date, make notes, comments, draw pics, note phone numbers etc.
I'm also left handed, so I start at the back using just the left hand page. Once I've reached the front, I flip it over and do it again, so that both sides of the pages are used.

I never tear any pages out as it becomes almost a second diary of my life.

ClemClemFandango · 17/09/2018 10:47

I always have a notebook on the go. Everything goes in and I don't tear the pages out. It's neat at the front where I write money in/money out, plans for the house, menu planning, weight loss journal, Christmas card lists, that sort of thing. But it's very messy at the back with to do lists, shopping lists, phone numbers, appointments, etc. When it meets in the middle I start a new one. Your notebooks need to fulfil their destiny.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 17/09/2018 11:47

I absolutely love fancy stationery but I don’t buy it anymore because I just don’t use it.

I bullet journal for work, in that I use a notebook and have an index and some other pages like a Daily Log and Calendar. I don’t make it pretty because I don’t have time and it’s for work! Also, I’m terrible for thinking if I make a mistake in a pretty book/page I have to start again Blush

I like ring notebooks with dots or graph paper, they’re quite expensive and seemingly only French. But not fancy.
