What do you call it when its not the flu?

I have been unwell since Thursday.

To begin with would have called it a headcold however now on day 4 of a low grade temperature (stays at 37.5 if regularly taking ibroprofen/paracetamol goes above 38 if i slip with tablets) and a throat thats beginning to feel irritated and a irregular cough that just feels dry and annoying yet tickly in my throat I am thinking this is likely not a cold but something more.

I know it is not " the flu" yet its what you would usually say isnt it? " I have a touch of flu" a virus to me seems so general and could be anything ..

So what do you say? (trying to entertain myself when my attention span is not good)

I went with a 'flu like virus' back in January when I had a lot of flu like symptoms and felt really ill but probably wasn't quite as bad as flu

Ginmakesitallok · 16/09/2018 20:57

A cold?

worknamechanged · 16/09/2018 20:59

Virus or bad cold.

flu like illness.
tbh I would leave off the ibu&paracetamol for now, so that the fever can help get rid of the infection.
fluids and rest is what you need.

Itchytights · 16/09/2018 21:00

Sounds viral.

I would call it a virus with cold/ flu like symptoms.

Feel better soon Flowers

Enko · 16/09/2018 21:04

so no proper word from anyone Grin

@redsummershoes I would leave off the painkillers but the headache when it goes too far is a killer so not yet I am drinking plenty though.

I just call is a bad cold.

About to head into my third week with this one - fever, throat that was beyond painful, snotty, coughing fit to burst, tight breathing, head full of wet cottonwool.

I hope yours passes quickly and you're back to bright and chipper.

OurMiracle1106 · 16/09/2018 21:05

Upper respiratory tract infection? Maybe. I’d probably say I have a virus though.

Enko · 16/09/2018 21:11

Thing is when you say a cold people are like.." really your off sick with a cold??" I know I would think it odd too... However I am really not in a state to be able to work. today I changed the bed and carried the bedlinned down 2 sets of stairs then had to sit down for 15 mins as I was wiped out by it... (weakling)

It's a shame the English language doesn't have a word that describes something that is worse than "just a cold" but when you're not as bad as having the flu!

MrsTommyBanks · 16/09/2018 21:13

A nasty cold or a virus.

chuckiecheese · 16/09/2018 21:16

It's probably a virus & Thursday is only four days ago. I had a cold during the Summer that had a cough that lasted six weeks Shock

A virus, the temp means your body is trying to get rid.

Sympathy, lots of fluid and bed/rest Thanks

FaithInfinity · 16/09/2018 21:20

Respiratory tract infection.

Enko · 16/09/2018 21:20

Feels a bit like I have spend this year sick in some way or the other,

Got the aussie flu in January and it was April before I stopped coughing. Then got Shingles in August and now this.

OP posts:
eurochick · 16/09/2018 21:21

I'd say a nasty cold.

2233xylophone · 16/09/2018 21:25

I'd probably say "cold and chest infection" or just "a virus". I get really uppity when people say they have the flu but clearly don't. Blush Mainly from knowing someone who does it all the time.

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 16/09/2018 21:28

It annoys me when people say 'a virus' meaning a low level illness. There are all manner of viruses. Flu, swine flu, norovirus, hepatitis. All viruses.

OP hope you feel better soon.

UterusUterusGhali · 16/09/2018 21:28

Stinky cold.

They suck. :(

Enko · 16/09/2018 21:32

Thing is I don't actually feel so much like its a cold anymore. I am not sneezing and my nose has cleared. Thursday/Friday for certain yes nose running and sneezing constantly and then nose would block up.

Now its a sore throat and atemp so I dont feel its a cold.

@SodTheBloodyLotOfThem I feel like you re virus.

Hope you feel better soon

Bamaluz · 16/09/2018 23:02

Sounds just like the sinus infection I had recently, so that's what I would call it.

Blue25654 · 17/09/2018 00:38

Sounds exactly like a cold to me so I would say that. Maybe ‘nasty cold’ if you want to get across feeling really bad? Hope you feel better soon, colds are horrid.
