Is giving a gift to new neighbours the done thing anymore ?

I'm sure it was a thing when I was younger but I've not heard of anyone doing it these days... is it still a thing? Like a bottle of wine or something ?

Oh yes, well it is round here.

heiheithechicken · 16/09/2018 15:54

We just had new neighbours.
We sent a card over and a bottle of wine.

chuckiecheese · 16/09/2018 16:08

I was tempted when our new neighbours moved in however they had rented their house out before moving in. We had eighteen months of disco loud music from 10pm-4am most weekends and some weekdays! It was difficult to even want to speak with themSad

They knew the problems the renters had caused because it all went through the local councilAngry

When I finally met them and I mentioned the previous tenants they casually commented that 'well they are gone now' as if the last eighteen months was of no consequence.

Neighbourly? No not really! No wine or card from me or the other five residents living in the vicinity. Wonder why?

It's a nice thing to do
(none for your noisy bastards of course chuckle)

I take a card round.
I've never taken a gift.
Depends on situation, but, in the past I've invited new neighbours over for drinks to find out more about them to welcome them to the neighbourhood in a friendly fashion.

BertieBotts · 16/09/2018 16:21

I've never experienced it myself but I'd be really touched if someone did and it would make me feel more able to approach the neighbour for help/friendship etc in the future.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/09/2018 16:22

I do this. Wine or a pot plant normally.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/09/2018 17:16

Yes, a card and flowers, my neighbour still tells me how welcome they made her feel.

ElspethFlashman · 16/09/2018 17:18

We got a soda bread and some buns. It was lovely. We invited them in and put on the kettle and heard all the gossip about the previous residents. Smile

Oh and there was a card! Just a New Home card with a "From Jack and Jill Davidson, No 42" sort of message inside.

GlitterBurps · 16/09/2018 17:27

When we moved recently a neighbour gave us a really nice bottle of wine. It was such a lovely welcome. I gave my old neighbours an orchid when they moved in. I think it’s a nice friendly gesture.

The day I moved in to my house my neighbor gave me a pan of lovely home made soup. It was so kind as I was in a bit of a mess!
