There'll be just me and DH, we live in London and don't drive, so we're looking to go somewhere within a few hours' journey as long as we can get there by train or bus.

I know it's a risk with the weather but it feels so glorious at the moment, on the cusp of Autumn. I love the idea of staying in a village or small town from where we can go for beautiful country walks, but also with a couple of wet weather options. I know a lot of places are closed out of season though so we need to bear that in mind.

I originally asked about the Scilly Isles in mid-September but we weren't able to get the time off after all.

Any suggestions welcome. Smile

Devon and Cornwall will be lovely at that time. And not as busy.

If you don't drive then you probably want to base yourselves in a decent sized place with good public transport. Have you been to Edinburgh? Lovely city, lots to do and see and plenty of trains, trams and buses. York would be another one, or Bristol/Bath? For lovely walks and things you could also look at W. Sussex (Chichester area), or Dorset (I love Lyme Regis). The Cotswolds is another obvious one for walking and lovely landscapes and I presume there is a decent bus service there, owing to it's popularity.

Stamford in Lincolnshire. It's 15 minutes by train once you change at Peterborough.
There are plenty of lovely walks that you can get buses/trains between (DH and I live in Peterborough and walk that way a lot).
Stamford has a small theatre and nice restaurants. You could also look round Burghley House if it's wet.
