Cheap Yankee Candle alternative

Florries · 15/09/2018 17:08

Hi everyone. I love a scented candle and often get a nice Yankee for my birthday in march or Xmas.

I've burned the last of my big Yankee and would love another but I'm on a tight budget.

Can anyone recommend a candle that is just as good as a Yankee - fills the whole of my downstairs with it's lovely scent and dosnt lose its smell even when the wax is nearly all gone. But a fairly cheap one?

its not really an alternative, but on ebay there are some being sold that have only been used once. i don't know if its really important to you that they are brand new, but if not then that may be an option.

I just got a homebargains gingerbread one for £2.99 and it's so nice. Really really highly scented!

Florries · 15/09/2018 21:00

Had no idea you could get used ones from eBay!! What a good idea!

I don't have a home bargain near m, but I do have a B&M. Do you think they'd do one?

The Aldi candles are fab and the smell is not as synthetic as yankie.

Dairymilkmuncher · 15/09/2018 21:08

Aldi candles are great and the room sprays

HighwayChile · 15/09/2018 21:17

Lytham St Anne's candles are lovely. I particularly love the wax melts which are as strongly fragranced as the Yankee ones and much cheaper:

Another vote for Aldi ones, they are so good. I lit it yesterday and could still smell it this evening. Also Primark have a really good one in a bronze tin. They smell much more expensive than they are.

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 15/09/2018 21:32

Another vote for the gingerbread one from home bargains. I bought it last year. It lasted for a very long time and so many people commented on it, assuming that it was a Yankee Candle. I think it was about £4.

Florries · 15/09/2018 21:58

Ooo I shop in Aldi so will pick up a candle! What kind of scents do they do? Any autumnal/wintery ones at all?

I buy the Yankee max melts. They're only £1.50 each. I have an electric burner from wilkos for £5.

Littlelambpeep · 15/09/2018 22:05

In marks and Spencer (grocery section next to bathroom cleaner etc) there is a candle called lemon verbena for about five pound. It is strong. Really beautiful. I often buy it and it doesn't break the bank

BurtTyrannosaurusMacklin · 15/09/2018 22:08

TK Maxx has a really big selection of really lovely smelling candles when I was in there the other day. Loads of autumnal/Christmassy ones as well.

SleepingBooty · 15/09/2018 22:11

Wax melts... autocorrect fail

MadisonAvenue · 15/09/2018 22:18

I buy various Home Bargains ones throughout the year, they're lovely and strong and an absolute steal at £2.99 for a large jar.

I've got one Gingerbread one stashed from last year in case they didn't stock them this Christmas but they posted on social media this week that they're now back in store, they're gorgeous. I had one very disappointed son last year who came in from college and on smelling it thought I'd been baking Grin

makingmiracles · 15/09/2018 22:22

I actually think the tesco ones are good, about £1.50 for a small jar and £5 for a big one that burns for 50hrs, I’ve got the spiced berries and apple and it’s really nice and helps cover the smell when dd has a bad nappy!

Will try Aldi though as they’ve been mentioned

RebeccaCloud9 · 15/09/2018 22:29

My current favourite is the asda wild jasmine. Gorgeous scent.

stripeszebra · 15/09/2018 22:33

I had an M&S candle in a "La Masion des sentures" bubble bath gift pack - it lasted very well and had a strong but subtle smell
Poundland stock " The Original Candle Company" - the Sugared Almond fragrance is good, they last as well as any other brand
Home and Heart, which are similar to Yankee - stocked in similar shops, had the sweet pea recently, and a christmas fragrance last year - both good

Justanotheruser01 · 16/09/2018 09:08

Do you have a hallmark near you? I got a big one for £11.99, also look at candles direct or a Yankee candle outlet store. I really havent found anything quite the same as them.

EscapeToTheMoon · 16/09/2018 09:41

I love the Wickford & Co ones (i think they’re called that) from Hone Bargains. Equally as good as Yankees for £4 a jar. The smaller pillar candles are great too as they fit nicely into the jars after you use them.

Plus Aldi of course.

Wilko do nice ones in tins. I have an Almond and Cashmere one in the hallway and its lush.

NicolaNoryon · 24/10/2019 15:11

Creamy vanilla is nice,so is blueberry and apple, but they aren’t as good as the black cherry..that one fills the whole downstairs with fragrance,x

ActualHornist · 24/10/2019 15:35

I like the Tesco scents but I normally get the wax melts.

Chillywilly93 · 19/09/2020 14:45

The good thing about candles is often the larger ones (like the Yankees) can be cheaper than the smaller ones, just look for larger candles. Also these are helpful:

I make my own in the slow cooker.

H1978 · 19/09/2020 16:24

Agree with the home bargains ones, smell really nice and unlike Yankee candles, they burn all the way down. Aldi scent lime, basil and mandarin is gorgeous too.

tsmainsqueeze · 19/09/2020 16:30

I think there are much nicer candles than yankee .
If you have a homesense or tkmax look there , i have had some lovely ones , colony , wax lyrical , agnes and cat are some of the ones i,ve bought .
I aim to spend as little as i can and always look on the clearance shelf.
My best buy of late has been a gorgeous brissi one rrp £30.00 for £3.00.
