Off the back of the thread in AIBU, what was your first job, how old were you and what was your hourly rate of pay.

Mine was working as a chambermaid (room attendant nowadays) in a swanky hotel. I was 16 and my mate Ashleigh got me the job. I earned a smashing £2.50 an hour. This was mid 1990s.

Pulling ragwort out of fields by hand aged 14, £80 for six weeks. I did it in my bikini and had the best tan of my life.

A summer job in a factory in the mid 90s. Hated every minute of it! It was backbreaking and some aspects quite dangerous. I felt so sorry for the people who did it as a full time job. I think it was £3.15 an hour.

sales assistant for Clinton Cards, I was 17, £3.96 per hour. I'm not sure how I managed to live on that!

Worked in a pet shop at 15 after exams til college in September. Took numerous poorly animals home. Most died!!
Weighed out bags of pet food that smelled amazing!! Advised customers about the animals and sold lots.
Ashamed to say years later bought a puppy from the same shop.

Supermarket shop floor Saturday job when I was 16, just over £2 p/h
mid 90's
It was backbreaking work and the bus fare wiped out a chunk of the days wages. It got a bit better once I got promoted to the deli.
Helped me save for uni though as I took every bit of overtime I could get.

At 12 I got 5 pounds a week for walking three German Shepherds for an ex-cockney east end gangster who had trouble with his legs and wasn't able to walk them anymore. Occasionally he would actually come along and tell me stories of the old days of the London criminal underworld, and would still pay me. At 14 I did a bit of modelling at art studios in Westminster and Chelsea and sometimes got as much as 50 pounds for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. At 16 I did a couple of hours at Superdrug every Saturday morning, I think I got 2.50 an hour. That was all in the early 90's.

Year in Industry scheme for engineers (I wasn't going on to do engineering though). First day was making a drill draft, I had turned up in skirt and heels 😎. It was full of males. Guy running it was 😱 😱😱 you've made a perfect drill draft, about the best in the group, and you're a girl in heels. Not sure what pay was, fairly low.

Penguinsnpandas · 15/09/2018 14:10

Sorry drill drift.

Saturday girl in a market shop selling mainly mens work wear, sheepskins and leather coats. It was 30 shillings or £1.50 for the DAY (8.30 -5.30) not per HOUR. I was 15, it was 1970s. All male staff except me and an old lady.

Found out one of the owners was in prison for receiving stolen sheepskinsShockGrin. I worked there a couple of years before moving to a shoe shop, warmer, shorter hours same money but less fun.

Lurkeycakewoman · 15/09/2018 18:24

In a fast food restaurant in Ireland I earned £3.20 an hour 20 years ago. I worked my way up the ranks and became a store manager and earned more back then than I do now in my adult life. But I used work 70 to 80 hours a week
I used randomly open shops for the franchise when they where stuck and could earn 400 for 2 days plus expenses

theboxofdelights · 15/09/2018 18:29

I worked in Hillards (supermarket) on Saturdays from the age of 15, 1983-1986. I can't quite remember what I earned but about £13 a day springs to mind.

HairyLegs11 · 15/09/2018 18:31

I was a waitress in a hotel restaurant. I was 15. I hated every second because I had a really mean supervisor. £2 per hour.

Bbbbb27 · 15/09/2018 18:34
